Can I have wedding pictures without a ceremony??

Megan, on April 10, 2017 at 12:19 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

My soon-to-be husband and I are not have a ceremony. We plan to sign papers and have a nice dinner with a few close family members and friends. We are going to Italy for our honeymoon and I was hoping to have pictures taken in a wedding gown there. Is that acceptable? It sounded like a great idea until someone commented about it's a bit silly to do pictures in full wedding attire without a "wedding." Would like some other non-biased opinions. Thank you!

It seems a little odd to me to drag a wedding dress to Italy to take pictures but it's not hurting anyone. Do what you want.

I'd say in this situation do whatever you want. If you want to go to Italy and put a wedding gown on and get some bomb ass pictures then go for it.

I agree, and in most states, you can't just 'sign the papers". You have to have some sort of ceremony, no matter how simple.

I personally think it's kind of strange too. I'd have a little ceremony, wear your dress, have dinner and then go on a honeymoon.

Do it! We did a shoot in our wedding clothes due to a mishap with some of our pictures and it was the sweetest time! No stress, we just took some really sweet pics. Smiley smile

Is it a little silly? Yes, because you're not going to look back on your photos and whistfully reminisce about your romantic elopement to Italy. You'll look back at the photos and think about that time you played dress up on your honeymoon and paid someone to take photos of it. On the other hand it's not actually hurting anyone, so you do you.

I definitely agree that it's silly. Do you really want to buy an expensive dress and lug it halfway around the world just so you can play dress up? But silly or not, it's not hurting anyone. Go for it if you feel strongly about it, but just realize that most people are going to find it odd and unnecessary.

Also, you do realize that you can and should hire a professional photographer for your wedding and restaurant reception, right? We've seen many courthouse weddings here that were photographed beautifully. It should be more important to have your actual wedding day captured professionally rather than a dress up day that has no real meaning.

    Arlene, use entire words.

No one 'deserves' anything, but what the hell. It doesn't hurt anyone.

I'd buy a gown there rather than ship one honestly- but I see nothing wrong with doing a pretty photoshoot just for the sake of doing a photoshoot.

I'm #teamart all the way- I think pictures are amazing- and doing photoshoots is a regular part of my life (when I can afford it).

    I say do it. #treatyorself

Signing papers is your ceremony. Who cares...go for it.

I'm with Jo on this one. If it were me, I'd go all out and buy a killer dress in Italy by an Italian designer. Then have a photo shoot in it cuz why not.

Depending on the state where you plan to 'make it legal' you may need at least a basic ceremony at the courthouse/town hall/wherever it will be.

When I do these, I'm still required to ask 'do you...' and 'do you...' and say 'I now pronounce you...'

I see nothing wrong with it! I just saw someone I know do a "second wedding photoshoot" two years after their wedding, I didn't think it was weird.

You're not hurting anyone by doing this. It does seem a little odd to me, like playing dress up. There's nothing wrong with dress up though! : )

I say do whatever YOU want. Pictures in your dream dress on your dream vacation will be amazing. It's just you and FH. Who cares if other people think it's silly?

Maybe just buy a nice dress and nice outfit for him and have pictures taken. I wouldn't buy a wedding gown just for pictures

In Korea couples usually take their pictures all dressed up weeks before the wedding, I don't see the issue with doing it after! It's the same as doing any other couples shoot... just with a probably more expensive dress haha.
