Calling all Cinco de Mayo brides!

Christi, on October 20, 2011 at 8:58 AM Posted in Planning 0 30

We are getting married on May 5, 2012. We are not Mexican, and don't want to do a full themed wedding, but would love to add a little Cinco de Mayo flavor to our event. Are there other brides out there getting married on May 5th? Any suggestions for "spicing" up our wedding.

Hi Christi my fellow Cinco De Mayo bride.

I was just going to post a thread like this yesterday, so thank you! We are having a very traditional wedding theme--just pretty decor, nice venue, colors we are using are mocha, chocolate and off white flowers. The only CDM elements we have are the food and beverages. Hot buffet with rice, beans, fiesta corn and a few hot entrees like enchiladas, burritos, fajitas and a taco bar. Our signature drinks are margaritas and white sangria. We will have chips and salsa for munching before dinner. We are having a dance, a cake and a candy buffet for favors. Church ceremony with pics afterward-cookies and punch in the fellowship hall for guests to pause and get a snack. Reception to follow at the local country club. We are both in our late 40's and most of our guests will be at least that old or older, so we aren't getting too crazy.

We almost picked 5/5/2012 because our venue had that or the date we chose open for May. I never even thought of it being Cinco de Mayo when we were deciding what date to go with LOL

Hey date twins! I think that Julie's Cinco de Mayo wedding sounds incredible. MekMek had some great suggestions for how to spice up a Cinco wedding a few weeks back (sorry, I can't remember what thread that was on). Julie, do you remember what thread that was on?

My FH does not want us to include any Mexican into our theme. He and his family are Cuban, and they're very proud of their heritage. FH is afraid that guests will think mistake them for Mexicans (nothing against Mexicans, but they don't want to be mistaken for something that they're not), and will think that they celebrate Cinco de Mayo. I thought that sounded kind of crazy until one of our highly educated guests made a comment to me about how special it was that I chose a date to honor my FH's heritage. I was in shock. I asked her if she knew that he was Cuban, and she said "yes." I then had to tell her that Cinco was a Mexican holiday. She actually thought that it was something that all Hispanics celebrated...

Well Hello...date twins.....I love Julies wedding plans, they sound great! @ Andrea, I think that is a misconception of most people, and it is kind of sad!

My FH is Mexican but I honestly didn't think about that when I chose the date. And yes I chose it and he agreed, lol. We are not having a full blown Mexican wedding, we are just adding a few Mexican things. We will have a mexican buffet, margaritas, and Mexican beer. Our colors are eggplant with accents of black and green (I haven't found the exact green I love yet) We are also going to have a traditional mexican cake (a fruit cake soaked in rum, yum!) along with another cake. FH wants to have a pinata for the kids and he has chose some mexican music for the reception. I have been getting a few "jokes" about there being mariachi bands, sombreros, huaraches, and sarapes. I take it all in stride. FH loves his hertiage and so do I!!!

Cinco De Mayo is normally confused with Mexican Independence Day (el Dieciseis de Septiembre) which is celebrated on 16th of September. Cinco de Mayo is the anniversary of a battle that took place between the Mexicans and the French in 1862. It is celebrated on May 5th every year.

Thanks to all of you for digging on my evil plans--Ha ha. and thanks to Shannon for the clarification regarding the holiday. Choosing CDM was really an accident. We are both getting married for the second time, and wanted to avoid the months we got married in the first time. We live in Nebraska and wanted to avoid bad weather and Husker season, so that left us pretty much with May, June or July. It gets damn hot here in June and July so when FH and I sat down to pick a date, he suggested the first Saturday in May, 2012. We looked at the calendar, and whaddyaknow-it just happened to be CMD. We love love love Mexican food and drinks, and had chosen Fiestaware for our new dishes already, so we thought it was perfect. As far as what our wedding will look like--OF COURSE you will all see a pic overload when its in our rearview mirror.

We chose the date by accident. Won't be using any Cinco de Mayo flavor, our wedding is going to be a little more traditional

We were kind of limited with our dates. We have a BM and a GM who are both working on their PhDs right now at different schools. We wanted to find a date where they would both be on a break. We were able to choose between May 5 and May 12. We just happened to go with May 5. I'm happy that we did. It'll be an easy anniversary to remember. I just don't want people going up to FH's family wishing them a happy Cinco de Mayo...some of his family members will probably be confused (especially the older ones who have broken English) and think that whoever's doing the wishing must be Mexican. It never occured to us that it would be an issue until after we chose our date.

    Can't wait for the pics...Julie!

This is also the second marriage for me and my FH. I originally wanted to get married in March but we live in a very snowy, cold place (we actually have been the coldest in the nation a few time....yikes!) I thought a winter paradise wedding would of been awesome. But after careful consideration for OOT guests, I just randomly picked the first weedend in May. Low and behold its CDM.

Continued exciting planning to all..... only 198 days! *slight vertigo*

I meant weekend, not weedend...... lol

Hi date twins. We selected CDM because it was the anniversary of our first date. I have been trying to talk FH to having a pinata on the patio especially since we are having a lot of kids at our wedding, and there will be plenty of tequila. Other than that, we are not doing anything special.

Neither of us are Mexican, but I think having a Mariachi band during cocktail hour or dinner might be kind of fun.

@ Andrea.... I would hope people would be more considerate! I don't expect anyone to wish anyone in FH's family a happy CDM...especially since not many know the real meaning of it. Its not Mexican Independence. I hope people realize it is your wedding day not a "fiesta". Good Luck, I hope it doesn't happen but if it does, shame on them!

    Seriously! Great points. Thanks, Shannon!

Beth, what kid wouldn't love to have a piñata? Your wedding sounds like it'll be a blast!

Shouldn't it be a Fiesta since it is my wedding day? At least I am hoping it turns into one heck of a fiesta!

You are correct, Beth! If you want it to be a fiesta it should be! If you don't want your wedding day to have any relevance to Mexican just because it is on CDM, then thats what you should have. My day is going to be one hell of a fiesta but I think Andrea's may be one hell of a great party.

BJ.... I like your way of thinking!

FH wanted to have a pinata--an adult pinata. With packs of cigarettes, little bottles of booze and condoms and small "toys"--This would be hilarious, and our friends would think it would be a hoot, but not with all the mature folks and small children who will be in attendance. I think that would be in order for an anniversary party with friends who can appreciate my FH's sophistacted brand of humor. LOL
