cake - What do ya'll think?!

on February 17, 2021 at 10:06 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 19

(This is not a Covid advice/precaution question)

We are not really into the idea of a huge wedding cake - we both aren't even really crazy about cake and can't imagine spending hundreds on one for our wedding.

We already are having a grazing table and our venue isn't huge. I would like to minimize the amount of tables if I can!

We are having a plated dinner, two long tables with 38 people at each (kind of feast/thanksgiving style) and thought about having small, self serve cakes as part of the centerpieces - so probably 5 per table - on cake stands down the center of the tables with the flowers/greenery and candles.

Is this tacky? The would all be one flavor for reference! So no one would be passing around different flavors!

Would they be individually wrapped? Or just sitting out? I feel like if they would just sit there then maybe they would become dry. I definitely don't think it's tacky though, I feel like it'll be cute!

I have been to a wedding that did this! Granted, it was pre-Covid, so I would definitely take the date of your wedding into consideration as to whether or not it would be a safe practice. That being said, at the wedding I went to it was super cute! They actually used the cakes as their table numbers. The topper on each cake was a gold reflective number

I would have them made and delivered by the baker, but I would probably have them just out during dinner. I'm sure the baker would have them stored the day of somehow!

It’s definitely not my cup of tea have you thought about doing individual cakes and that could work as their favor and the wedding cake?

I have thought about that! I loved that idea but our catering servers won't serve other foods/desserts and they don't offer cakes. And our baker doesn't offer serving, so it may just be a little messy trying to figure out a way to have the cake served.

The baker would work with our planner and have the cakes placed on the tables the way we want them, but she would then leave.

I think it’s definitely a cute idea! I would just make sure there was a proper way to keep the small cakes covered, moist, and from being handled by too many people - like pre-cut for sure.

I’ve seen people do cakes in place of centerpieces before so it is definitely not unheard of. If we are taking Covid concerns out of the mix, I would say the only concern would be getting them cut and served. Do they cut them themselves or does the staff have to take them away to cut?

The cake will be fine sitting out during dinner. Most weddings have the cake on display throughout the party.
Alternatives could be little boxed cupcakes at each seat.

You could do small cupcake towers instead so it is COVID safe and you won’t have to worry about cutting/serving.

Would guests have to cut their own slice of cake for this self-serve plan? If so, then honestly that sounds really messy and a bad idea IMO. If you're not into the idea of traditional wedding cake, then I'd have cupcake towers.

If guests have to cut it themselves, I think a lot would just skip the cake all together (I know I’d skip). If you want something self serve, I’d go for cupcakes. You could get small tiered cupcake holders so that they’d look about cake sized/take up about the same amount of space. I think you’ll find guests far more likely to grab a cupcake than to cut a slice of cake.

Sorry, I should have clarified! We definitely would have the cakes pre-cut by the baker. It would be a total disaster to have guests cutting the cake themselves LOL

I'd recommend doing cupcake towers instead. Unless you're able to coordinate with your baker about the right timing to pre-slice the cake or have your caterers slice it shortly before the guests eat it. Pre-sliced cake doesn't keep very long and is especially difficult to store. I'd think that if it were sitting there for more than an hour then it wouldn't taste so good...I think cupcakes are your best bet!

I think that is definitely a really interesting thing I’ve never heard of but it sounds like it would be more feasible to just have individual cupcakes

I've seen centerpiece cakes where guests served themselves and no one had any issues. Plus they can have extra if they like.

Cake has to sit out for days after it is cut before it dries out. Or be frzoen at any period and then defrosted. A regular sitting on a table is not going to dry out in minutes.

Maybe do cupcakes to minimize people touching an entire cake and it would be easy for people to just grab. We are having a small cake for us to cut and stands of different cupcake flavors.

I would do cupcake towers! Even with pre-sliced cake, self serve can still be messy. Cupcake towers would also likely look better aesthetically than pre-sliced cakes.

Regular cake slices are easier to eat with less mess than cupcakes

I would have them be individually wrapped/covered since I'm weird when it comes to open foods. Or if you cut them all at the same time and passed them down the table.
