Cake Stands???

Mrs. Cat, on October 26, 2010 at 3:49 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

I know I'm full of questions - but we're coming down to the wire... Are cake stands absolutely necessary? We're having a three tiered cake, with a sheet cake in the back for support. The baker wants to charge us $50 to rent a cake stand (refundable), but I am not doing this unless it's absolutely necessary - we are at our budget limit...

Do the tiers sit directly on top of each other?

I think it depends on the cake itself. It needs something to sit on. But the cake stand should be incuded in the price of the cake if you ask me... She's shouldn't be coming at you this late in the game asking about it.

I don't think it's necessary. have seen pictures of cakes with and without stands. For the ones without I think they just use a foil covered flat surface.

Most places in the UK dont include the stand. A friend of mine bought a stand on ebay and then resold it after her wedding. Not sure what we're doing yet.

Or you can just find a box that is the right size and drape fabric over it, or drape a table cloth over it. If you are crafty you can actually wrap the box like a present in fabric that coordinates with your colors.

Sometimes the venue will have one for you to use

If you use my box idea, make sure it's a sturdy box, you wouldn't want it to cave in or tip when the cake is on it.

Yes the tiers sit on top of each other. I was surprised too, Meghan, that it wasn't a given, or that they didn't mention it earlier. What do they deliver the cakes on, after all?

I'll check with my venue, and the caterer. One of them should have something...

The cake maker I chose told me the cake was delivered on a silver or gold (foil) wrapped board. (only a very small amount of the board was visible.)

My venue provided either a square or round cake stand as part of my package. If your venue doesn't provide one, I'd make one or even look at buying/renting one from a party store. I'm sure they can be found for cheaper than $50

I think $50 is a bit high, but it's just a deposit, right? If you get 100% of it back, it's probably worth it.

Cake stands are never included. some bakers don't even have them, and if they do they absolutely ask for a deposit and you are responsbile for returning them. Those stands cost about $200, so a baker will not let it go without a promise of return.

I offer cake dummies to be ordered, and then they can be draped with a tablecloth at the venue. This is if the couple wants a taller cake. Another way is to have dummy tiers added to the cake. For instance, only 3 tiers are real, and the bottom two are fake, and now you have a huge cake!

$50 deposit is about right in my area.... she really should have told you up front but as long as you make sure it gets back to her that shouldn't be a problem getting your money back quickly

Our baker does not provide a cake stand either. It is delivered on a gold or silver cardboard cake board. Since we are having a small wedding, our 2 tier hat box style is small. I need a bigger bottom layer because of how I want to decorate it, so I can't buy the usual 13" cake stands one can find at Bed Bath and Beyond, Pottery Barn, or Pier 1 imports. I have also priced many different kinds on Etsy and other places. THe pedestal kind are pricey...but elegantly beautiful. Others can be found on Wilton's website. Still others can be found at craft stores. We are either decorating a hat box as Konichiwa suggested, or buying either of the two below, and hopefully reselling. The wood stand is from Etsy. The white wire one is from Wilton and we will spray paint it brown. We haven't decided yet.

If you are getting your money back though, I would think it wouldn't be an issue.

    Good luck!

Our venue provided one free of charge too but it was silver and because our colors were ivory, claret and gold I just "made one" from a pic that I saw on www.sav-on-crafts.com like Mrs. Jacques made herself but mine was not as cheap as I would have liked. I called a glass company and they charged me $63 for the circular glass base but the candle holders I bought from the Dollar Tree and they were $1 each and then I bought the plastic gems to go inside the candle holders and I belive each box was about $1.25 each (50% off at Hobby Lobby) and the flameless candles were $1 each at the Dollar Tree so all together I think I spent about $80 or so but I got what I wanted. As I said though check with your venue, they may have one you can use for free.

My cake was also on a piece of plywood covered in silver foil that you can barely see. We did not have to pay anything extra for it, but she did ask if we could return it.

My friends and I actually purchased our wedding cake stands from a woman who makes beautiful cake stands with removable cake skirts. Seems that most bakers only provide those boring looking plain cake rounds to display your cake...why spend so much money on a gorgeous cake to just put it on a dull piece of cardboard? You can buy the stand kit I think it's called and it comes with a stand, a cake skirt and matching flower and ribbon for only $65!!! She has a good selection of fabric skirts and crystal ones too. The best thing about this cake stand is you can change the skirt over and over to match every event! This is the stand I purchased. Check her out on cakedress.com!
