Cake server/knife: cool reminder of wedding day or Wedding Industrial Complex buy?

TexasBeThyFrontier, on August 27, 2014 at 12:37 PM Posted in Planning 0 52

I keep going back and forth -- should get a cake server with our names engraved that we could pass down to our kids, or is the cake server and knife really just a product of the Wedding Industrial Complex? Are they now sitting in your junk drawer, or do they get a fair amount of use?

We don't already have a cake server or a cake knife. Here's what I'm considering:

Server: http://www.etsy.com/listing/198849697/best-day-ever-hand-stamped-cake-server?ref=favs_view_9

Knife: http://www.allmodern.com/French-Bull-Raj-Cakestand-and-Knife-Set-117CSS-FBL1253.html#reviews

I did register for a set, but I wont bother spending a bunch of money on one...I can't imagine there will be that much use for them in future

I don't think i'll get one, I've never seen one used IRL except in a wedding.

I think its a wedding industry item. your kids will want one of their own wedding date, if you had one. it sets the tone ya know? but to be fair, i have been looking at these, fancy but i can't bring myself to buy it. its a knife, doesnt the wedding place have knives? haha i get so riled up about it! like toasting flutes, they are glasses!!! why do they want me to be poor to eat cake?!

    *off my pedestal*

also the colorful set would suffice as knife & server really.

My venue told me that we should just not worry about that or a toasting set and they will provide us with a set of each to use. I can't see us really ever using it again and I'm sure that my children will want to pick out their own set if they want one.

We had a set on our registry. I also bought a set off Etsy. Personally, I should have just used what we already had. It's really not that big of a deal.

Our caterer also had back up options, just in case.

I honestly picked up a set from walmart last minute because it wasn't crazy important to me. I figure that you can't put sentimental value on every single aspect. You just have to pick and choose what is going to be important to you. For me, it was not a cake cutting set but for some people it is.

It will be a nice reminder of the wedding since I bake a lot so it will definitely get used. I'll be having a Disney set engraved that matches our cake topper and toasting flutes.

I'm not going to bother. My mother has a set she wants us to use, and that's just fine with me! Smiley smile

I inherited my great-grandmother's carving set. It was silver-plated to begin with but had worn off over the many years that she and my grandparents had used it. DH had it replated for me and we used that knife to cut our cake. When I officiated at my brother's wedding, I let him use the same knife to cut their cake.

We were gifted a knife set from my cousin that is gorgeous, I'm thinking about registering or buying the matching toasting flutes. I wanted these to begin with, for some reason so either way I would have bought them.

I was going to use my parents - up until they divorced. We bought a set, as our venue is a family owned farm and they don't have any backups. We will keep ours in a drawer and our toasting set is a pair of flutes that his Aunt purchased for us. If they have meaning to you, do it. If they don't, it's totally fine to skip it.

We used my parents set. I'm not sure that we would really have a use for them. But I think that maybe if you do get a nice set, no engraving so it can be a great thing to pass onto the kids.

We just used the set that matched our fine china. That way we can reuse it whenever we have a party at our place.

I registered for a set that I would reuse. I bake a lot, and didnt have an actual set, (which I wanted), so I got a nice metal one. I honestly dont know if I am going to use them at the wedding, (Its just ONE more thing I would have to keep track of), but I would get a set that you would reuse.

I would save your money. It's just one of those added extras nobody will notice except for you...and you will only use it for about 30 seconds. After that it will sit in the back of some closet because when you cut Birthday or Anniversary cake in the future you will just grab the nearest knife and skip looking for and washing your wedding day knife. Your kids will likely have different taste and different styles than you will...plus if it is engraved, they won't likely want it with your name on it.

I spent $70 on our set. It's made of real antler, FH is a HUGE outdoorsman, and we plan to use them at Thanksgiving (we host for about 30 people every year) to slice and serve the pies!

Nice reminder. There are so few things that you can use again as a reminder. I love mine.

I bought my toasting glasses and server set from hobby lobby... during wedding week for 50% off... I think I spent $20 total for those items. It's not worth it long term to me... I'm not a baker... i won't be using it for other cakes and pies. I'll just use a regular ole knife! LOL

Here's what I bought tho. They look great in person.
