Cake server/knife: cool reminder of wedding day or Wedding Industrial Complex buy?

I keep going back and forth -- should get a cake server with our names engraved that we could pass down to our kids, or is the cake server and knife really just a product of the Wedding Industrial Complex? Are they now sitting in your junk drawer, or do they get a fair amount of use? We don't...

We don't already have a cake server or a cake knife. Here's what I'm considering:

To me it's another Wedding Industrial Complex item. At no point did I even consider getting a set. It would be a pain to have to bring home again after the wedding (we travelled across the country for our wedding) and it would be something that would sit in a drawer and never get used.

I have my bouquet, dress and pictures, plus a couple gifts, to remind me of my wedding. I don't need a cake cutting set that will never get used again.

We bought a set for the wedding (without engraving), and sold it afterwards. We've never felt a need for a set since then.

We were given one as a gift very soon after getting engaged so I never had to think about it. We used them on the big day and they're now sitting in the box we received them in. I didn't put them in my wedding shadow box . Perhaps we'll pass them down, or not. I just don't feel all that sentimentally attached to them. I guess we could just use them again any time we are serving cake at home.

Wedding Industrial Complex if you have an inclusive venue - maybe needed if you're providing all servingware.

We registered for them because they are traditional but I'm not even planning to use them at the wedding. I fear them getting lost in the hubbub.

Maybe each couple that uses it can have their names & date engraved on it. Then it would be a family heirloom.

I have my family silver collect that I've been trying to build up over the last few years (it was pretty disorganized and in rough shape when it got to me). I use the set at least once a year, but try to use it more. I am missing the knife though and that's going to be a splurge for the wedding, and I think I'm going to get the carving set as well. I'll just hide it under the ... I donno. Cake budge? catering? something. No one will ever think to look there o.O

Anyway, back to you! - I think this is one of those YMMV items. I love hosting formal dinners at our house and use these things. Folks who don't have that same hostess-y inclination should totally not buy them and rent/borrow/use hands if necessary.

I'm using my sister's set from her first wedding. It's gorgeous! I don't know if I would have bought a set if she didn't have these lying around though.

I didn't realize this was even a thing until a month before the wedding - certainly not for me to fall for!

I would have tried to find used ones at goodwill, but we just used what the venue had available for us. I couldn't have cared less if I simply brought a fork and butter knife from home to use. We almost forgot to even cut our cake, and after we did (simply for photo's sake), we forgot to eat it. Hahaha - we were having too much fun at that point.

I spent $30 at oriental trading for a personalized set and donʻt regret it at all

I too am torn - since we are doing cupcake towers with a small 6 inch cake for us and a cutting effect I feel like it's a waste of money to but a special knife and serving thing. Although I really LOVE the cake server you posted from Etsy. I just might spend the $12 Smiley smile

We always need another cake server so I splurged and bought this set. Less than $8 w/ free delivery. It looks really nice too!

I had them my first wedding and pretty sure they were thrown away somewhere. This time around we put our money towards other things. Just not an important item to me. But I am not a keeper of things anyway.

Total waste of money. Even if you stay married, what are the odds you'll want to lug them around for all the moves you will make before your kids get married?

I am using the set my parents used when they were married in 1984. It has a lot of meaning to me since my mom passed away when I was younger.

I think it's a good thing to have if, like MrsMtobe, use them all the time for holiday things.... but I just registered for plain ones and will be using FH's grandma's ornamental ones, just like everyone else in his family Smiley smile May eventually get a fancy one just in case I become one of those grandmas/moms Smiley smile

My serving set was the first thing I bought for my wedding. I found a seller at a craft show who did exquisite hand beaded silver. She had nothing in my colors so she made it special for more and shipped it a week later.

Now, was it a big deal at the wedding? Not really but buying it kind of set my wedding planning in motion.

I wasn't going to buy a cake cutting set or toasting glasses for myself but my mom bought us a cute cake serving set that has a quote about love on it and two forks one says " i do" the other says "me too" and I really do like them ! My aunt bought us engraved toasting glasses for valentines day last year and I love them as well!

Would I have bought them for myself? Probably not ... But my fam knows that about me and therefore bought them for me ! Lol

Our venue has a set, and we will use that. They also have toasting glasses, which I would use had I not bought some personalized ones already. Smiley smile
