Cake server/knife: cool reminder of wedding day or Wedding Industrial Complex buy?

I keep going back and forth -- should get a cake server with our names engraved that we could pass down to our kids, or is the cake server and knife really just a product of the Wedding Industrial Complex? Are they now sitting in your junk drawer, or do they get a fair amount of use? We don't...

We don't already have a cake server or a cake knife. Here's what I'm considering:

I think it's a little of both! A cool reminder and just another Wedding Industrial Complex Buy. It's definitely not needed, but I still have my toasting flutes from my wedding in 1973. They're engraved with our names and dates and I never use them but they are displayed in our China cabinet, and are a reminder of the great time we had on our wedding day. As you get older, I find you need some reminders, since we don't remember things the way we used to. lol

I bought engraved flutes for my daughter and wll give them to her at her shower.

We got a matching set its the knife, server and toasting flutes. They are absolutely beautiful. We are only having the knife engraved- on the blade in very small font as close to the handle as they can do it. We are hoping that our kids will use the set for their wedding days and we will have their names and dates engraved on them as well. We would like for it to become a family Heirloom.

When I bought ours, I had no intention of handing them down. To me, they were kind of like the dress. My mom offered to let me use hers, and as a girl I always pictured using mom and dad's cake servers. When it got to be my turn, I wanted my own. I plan on using them when we have company, and putting them in a china hutch until then. I'll try to take pictures of them later.

I'd tend to say it's a waste, but that set Andi posted is so pretty.... damnit.

I could see getting the serving set, but not the flutes. We don't drink wine or champagne; we'd be better off with beer mugs or shot glasses.

I don't have one yet either. think I'll mention that to my groom today.

it's not terribly important to me, but do need something to cut the cake with!

from the ones you mentioned, I like the Etsy one. think we may just use a big knife and I'll put a ribbon on it.

I have my parents set, Mom passed when I was a kid. I treasure them. I will likely be displaying them at the wedding, with their wedding pic. I did however get us a set of knife/ server and flutes. Clearance rack $43 with shipping and engraving for both.

I was going back and forth too... but I decided to get something that looked nice and that we could use later, more of an every day use item. I think we'll have more than enough mementos from the wedding, ya know?

    Here's what I got-

Between the caketopper, pics, dress, personalized champagne glasses etc.... I have plenty to remember my wedding day lol. So I opted not to spend the money and just use the set provided by the venue, same with the guest book.

My MIL surprised us with an engraved set, and while it's lovely it currently sits in a drawer. I'm sure we will pull it on on anniversaries and the like. *shrug* But personally I wouldn't spend the money on it.

Hmm, our venue is just a venue with a catering kitchen -- catering services are handled separately. We aren't using the caterer's cake-cutting fee -- our cake baker is cutting the cake for free, but she will need something to work with. Perhaps I should just buy something reasonable that will arrive by Sept 6, try to get something cute and memorable, and call it a day, because I'm guessing the caterer wouldn't be down with giving us the supplies if we're not paying for cake-cutting.

I ended up ordering this cute cake knife by French Bull since we'll need a cake knife no matter what:

Bonus: the cute design matches our cake colors, too.

Still going back and forth on the server ...

Not going to bother. Our venue has four sets for us to choose from, along with four sets of toasting flutes to choose from. We'll be using those. We registered for a pair of champagne flutes and if we had gotten them for the shower (or happen to get them in the weeks before the wedding) we'll use those, but otherwise, we're not going to spend the extra money.
