Cake or cupcakes?

Mary, on August 13, 2020 at 8:48 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 2 85

Hubby and I are having a debate...I suggested a small cake for us to cut and cupcakes for guests. It's more cost effective, a cake would cost close to $700. The small cake with cupcakes could save us $300. He thinks everyone should get cake. Have any of you been to a wedding where they served cupcakes? Did it look off, as my husband says? Thanks for your help.

I have not experienced this personally, but we also considered doing this if not for the fact that our venue also covered the cost of the cake.

I think the benefit of cupcakes is that you can also have different flavors, so you will more than likely appeal to most guests, where as if you have one cake flavor, I'm sure there will be people who feel eh about that flavor. I don't think having cupcakes would be off, in fact I think it is trendy now. I have seen donut walls, chocolate fountains, dessert pedestals, so the traditional cake is not necessarily the only option anymore.

Thank you so much! I agree about the benefit of having different flavors to appeal to more guests.

I don't think there's anything wrong with doing cupcakes! I've heard of many people doing cupcakes instead of cake. And like the previous comment mentioned, more flavor options for guests. If you had your heart set on doing cake, a cheaper option may be through Costco or a grocery story instead of a bakery.

We are doing a cake for us to cut and then cupcakes. We will have 3-4 cupcake flavors depending on our final guest count. It is saving us about $350 to do cupcakes instead of a full cake, plus no cutting fee!

We opted to do a 6" cutting cake with 2 flavors of mini cupcakes. Most of our guests are "sweets" people and the cupcakes would be light and refreshing.

We are doing mini cupcakes and a donut wall. Then a small cake for us to cut. We got to choose a variety of flavors for the cupcakes. Saves on money and a lot of our friends that have gotten married said they had a lot of cake left over when they did cake for their guests! Smiley smile

    We are!
It's cost efficient, and if anyone wants some of our cake they are more than welcome to have some.
It's also very popular, my cousin had a massive cake with cupcakes, all the cupcakes were gone unlike the cake.

I would say shop more vendors as some are cheaper than others. Also, you could do a cake for you to cut and a sheet cake but honestly as someone that has baked and decorated cake and cupcakes it will be the same recipe. If you get cakes and cupcakes from the same place it will not matter, same batter lol.

Thanks Lisa! I have tried grocery stores and most don't do weddings anymore. I will look into BJ's, I have a membership there.

That was my thought, saving $$$ is a priority. The more options for guest the better. Thanks!

The cupcakes will look fantastic with a single tier cake for cutting and guests will appreciate the different flavors. Cake/cupcakes are similar. I think if you two had cake but served everyone else cookies that might not be appreciated. With cupcakes you’re fine! 🍰 🧁

I think cupcakes would be awesome! My brother and his wife had a regular cake for cutting then ice cream cake for everyone to eat. They had two different flavors to pick from. It was so good and something different from just your standard wedding cake.

It didn’t look off, first time I saw a cupcake tower was several years ago and I thought it was cute and creative. I prefer the look of a tier cake for my own wedding though.

I had a small wedding and we did cupcakes for our wedding. The main reason for this was for sanitary and COVID precautions. We had the cupcakes in clear individual boxes with silver inserts to keep them in place. No one complained about that. The guest could eat them at the wedding or take them to go. My husband and I had a small 5” cake for ourselves on the side
