Buying wedding dress in store versus online

nautiwife, on February 5, 2016 at 5:12 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

My FH and I have been engaged for just over a month and originally planned to get married next year, but we decided we didn't want to wait that long. So I am looking to get married in just over 5 months, either elopement or a very small ceremony (that's another story). My concern is that I wont be able to find a dress with enough time by going to a store and staying within my budget ($100). I know there are $100 dresses out there but I haven't like any that I have seen yet (most David's Bridal). I am also worried about the amount of time it takes to get a bridal dress. I am looking into buying something online that is within my budget but I am concerned about whether or not they are good quality and will get here on time.

Any brides out there that ordered their dress online? Did you have a good experience? Or should I avoid buying a dress online like the plague and stick to bridal shops and buying off the rack?

Check out modcloth and asos. Asos has free shipping both ways, I think modcloth you might have to pay for return shipping. I think it might be hard to find a $100 dress at a bridal shop (aside from db) but you could look at Nordstrom or lord and Taylor, etc.

Just a suggestion, but perhaps you can look into the prom dresses that are out right now? Some of them come in white and look quite bridal, but they don't come with the hefty price tag. There's also more of an assortment of styles and sizes. I know I didn't dare look online for mine.

Also, depending on what type of dress you're looking for, there are a TON of really beautiful bridesmaids dresses that come in white and ivory that could be passed off as a bridal gown.

Honestly I'm not even sure if you'll be able to find an off the rack in a store for under $100, but it's worth a shot. Ask if they have any floor samples for sale, too. But I think your best bet is to use modcloth.com or azazie.com. I'm not sure what style you're going for but those will be good places to start looking!

Also if you'd consider used, your city might have a local wedding resale group on facebook.

My budget was low on a bride dress, so I went with a bridesmaid dress in ivory color and touched it up with a sparkling belt.

I've thought about prom dresses and bridesmaid dresses. I haven't had a chance to go look for anything yet but I will definitely look into those options. Luckily I don't want anything too crazy. I actually anti-bling. I will also look into some of those sites.

I purchased my dress online. If you know what style you want, online shopping is much easier. Know your bust, waist and hip measurements. Look online at large box stores like Nordstrom, Macy's, Dillard's etc. Even Amazon.com. I bought my dress from tradesy.com, but also try preownedweddingdresses.com and eBay. Lots of brides sell their dresses that they haven't worn! You can find a dress you love in your budget, but you may have to do a bit of online searching or store hunting. Check consignments stores too.

I nabbed mine on David's Bridal online, because they couldn't order it in store anymore due to it being discontinued. They're having an awesome online sale right now, including all final sale/sample dresses, so definitely check with them in their final sale section!

I only recommend buying from China in the following circumstances:

You fit one of the template sizes or can afford to have alterations

You have the money to spend on a replacement if it isn't what you wanted

You don't need the dress to have much support in the bust/structure

You ONLY order through a middle-man type of site, where you can push for a refund or partial refund if there are issues.

I ordered one from a seller on AliExpress because my "dream" dress was out of my price range, but I bull headedly tried it on before checking the price against my budget. :/ They did a fair job of replicating it, BUT there was NO support in the bodice (strapless, and I'm very large busted), and the custom measurements were off enough that the dress was unwearable. The length was perfect though. The only positive was that I was able to get a partial refund, and it cured me of my obsession with the real dress that I had wanted. I'm now 100% thrilled with the dress I have from DB.

I found my dress for 100 so never listen to its not possible. Sample sales, bridal consignments, prom or special event dress also work good in a lot of cases. Where are you located?

@Silesha I am located in San Diego. I found a consignment bridal shop not too far from where I live. I will probably try to check it out soon to see if I can find a deal.

@ Randee I'm looking for something either sheath or maybe a little trumpet/mermaid, but still not super tight and restricting. I actually don't even know if that is what I want, I haven't tried anything on. I would guess I need like a 12 to fit my hips and then probably a ton of alterations to fit everything else.

Consignment formalwear stores are becoming more popular. Some of the dresses I have altered from a shop such as this were not even worn, being sold for a fraction of the original price.

    Congrats to you!
