Broke my ankle with 11 weeks to go... Ugh!

K+A, on February 21, 2015 at 7:14 PM Posted in Planning 0 23

Can't believe my luck on this one. I slipped on Friday the 13th, and broke my tib/fib in my ankle. Had surgery yesterday, and all went very well and I'm finally on the road to recovery.

I should be walking about 2 weeks before the wedding, and will be in a boot for the big day, which I'm not thrilled about but it could certainly be worse. I am bummed this ruined my gym/weight loss plan.

I'm doing my best to look on the bright side with it all, but it does feel good to vent!

Oh no! Glad healing is going well though. With any luck, you'll be able to dance a little and enjoy your party. The boots are no fun, but at least you'll be able to walk down the aisle!

I busted my foot in college and was on crutches the week I met FH. Sprained my ankle and was on crutches by the end of the week after he proposed. I am crossing my fingers that this bad luck doesn't come in threes- I don't want to be on crutches wedding week!

Yikes! Hope you heal quickly. Also - not to be a negative Nancy - but we're you planning on wearing heals? Think you'll still be able to? :/

Believe me I'm as determined as can be to heal up fast and good! I'm just so so happy they expect I'll be able to walk down the aisle and not hobble or scoot.

My dress will cover up the boot well enough... and I'm sure I can take it off for a few pictures Smiley smile

ETA: Already bought my wedding shoes about a month ago, they're 2.5 inch thick heels, so I think I'll probably be able to wear the left one all night, and put the right one on for some pictures.

Holy cow I totally missed the boot part... Haha. Glad your dress will cover that! What awesome luck you should be walking 2 weeks before wedding.

Thanks everyone, doing my best to not let it get me down!

I know everything will still be beautiful and perfect -- just hoping I'll be able to get some dancing in Smiley smile

I'm home from work for a couple weeks so hopefully I can use the time to get ahead on more planning.

It could be worse... You'll be ok. And as far as the weight loss... It's a hassle to get to the frig now! Heal quickly!

    I hear you!

I destroyed my ankle fib/tib a few years ago. ( I had several invisible to the eye breaks and dislocated my foot off my leg.)

Get a Back on Track brace for your ankle for when you start to walk and are healing. This will help with the swelling.

    Do your Physical Therapy.

And the weight loss...I actually lost weight when I was bed ridden for 5 months with my break. (I had two surgeries) Get on Myfitnesspal.com and log all your foods. I did this and lost weight just counting calories. Make sure your profile is set to the correct physical fitness level. You are now sedatary .

Oh no! If you need someone to commiserate with, I had a severe foot injury (Lisfranc fracture-dislocation) in September and haven't worn a left shoe since. Really frustrated about not being able to work out. Good luck with healing!

Good luck with recovery and what onawho said. PT is very important.

I already log on LoseIt (like My Fitness Pal) and am doing my best to continue doing so. The pain meds have actually done a number on my appetite as it is. FH just ordered me an arm bike so I can do some exercises that way soon.

I've actually been through a knee surgery before on the same leg, when I was 14. And I definitely know the importance of the PT, when I get to that point.

Thanks for the advice and well wishes everybody!

That sucks. My grandma shattered her knee right before her wedding so she had to be carried down the aisle and take crutches on her honeymoon. I'm terrified this will happen to me because her and I have weird life similarities. Good luck!

I had the exact same break a year ago. Not gonna lie, the ankle is one of the worst breaks you can have but PT does wonders. I had my cast/splint off within 16 days and got in to PT right away. Even had PT at home before I had the cast off. Hopefully you can get in 3x a week because that really helped. Pro: your heels will probably be better with the boot because it will offset the height difference. Hopefully it's your left ankle so you can drive. I got screwed with breaking my right.

Fh did the same break 6 years ago. Three plates, 16 screws, and a lot of staples later he was fine. A cow fell on him. Yes.... A cow. Lol. He was walking on it solidly at 3 months. Every now and then his ankle hurts. But he is just fine. In a couple years we will have the plates removed from his leg.

It's the right ankle - no driving for me any time soon.

I go back to the surgeon for a post-op in a week, at which point I hope I can start PT. It sounds like he wants me in the boot as soon as possible. I'm ready to start PT as soon as they'll let me!

@Ashley - OUCH! I think I have one plate and a small handful of screws, haven't actually asked that question yet. They all should be permanent.

@ K+A: I don't know how old you are, but FH was 17 when he broke his leg. Since he was so young the surgeon said he could have the plates removed in 10 years because his bones will have recouped enough to handle it without the plates. So when he is 27 he will have the surgery done to remove them.

What an unfortunate thing to happen right before the wedding, but don't let it get you down, your day will still be amazing!!

Also, if you're on crutches you'd be surprised the work out you get just moving around on those!
