Bridesmaid Dresses--Do they need to be same fabric?

Rachel, on June 4, 2013 at 12:17 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9

I'm letting my bridesmaids choose the style of their dresses, in David's Bridal Plum

I'm being told that they all have to be the same fabric, whether it's satin or chiffon or organza, but I don't think that there is too much of a variation between the fabrics.

What do you think?

Personally I think they need to be the same fabric because the plum color in satin is not going to be the same plum color chiffon is.

I think you need the same fabric because satin for instance is shiny and will have a different look and feel sight wise from a organza which is more flowy looking, etc. You don't want it to be a free for all completely!!

Welcome to WW, Rachel! Like Mrs K said, depending on the fabric, there can be a lot of variation in the color. For my BFF's first wedding, we all wore apple, but had different fabrics and you can tell that the colors are slightly off. David's has color samples in different fabrics that you can look at.

That said, it may be a good way to do the mismatched but still close look that's very popular. If you aren't deadset on the EXACT same shade of plum, but are happy with the slight variations between the fabrics, then go for it! It'll end up being a preference thing.

I hope you'll stick around and update your avatar (the rings) to ANY unique picture from Google we can more easily remember in the future. This post tells you how: https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/welcome-to-the-weddingwire-forums-please-read-if-you-are-new/b433c40c1a62b96a.html

It depends on what you want for your wedding. If it'll bother you if they're different then yes...keep them all the same fabric. For me...I don't care about the fabric...I just gave them a color and a length.

This is really just personal preference. I wanted all of my bridesmaids' dresses to be the same fabric, because as the other women have said there will be a variation in how the color looks based on the fabric. But if that doesn't bother you, then don't worry about it.

It doesn't bother me at all...but it bothers my mom, that's why I'm here. I know it's my wedding and all that, but I'd rather not make her upset and have her dislike something I'd rather not fight any battles, and I guess I'm okay with her winning this one. Just needed some confirmation

I would say same fabric because it may throw the color off. For example, blue in satin may look different than in chiffon.

Go with the same fabric. The colours definitely vary. I kind of wish I'd had my BM go with the satin in plum instead of chiffon. I was upset when the dress came in and it wasn't the pretty rich purple their website indicated. I'm fine with it now, but the satin plum is certainly much closer to what I would have wanted. Oh well.

Pick which colour representation in fabric you want. Make them show you swatches (something the consultant never offered to show me). I think it just makes it easier all around.

The first thing I would do is go to the store and ask to see the color in the different fabrics. This will help you determine what you like best. However, you may find again that you aren't really worried about the differences.

Next, I'd ask the BMs what fabric they would each prefer (assuming you like it). If they all like the same fabric, choose that one.

However, if there's still not a clear choice, I'd then suggest talking to your mom to find out exactly why she feels this way. Perhaps she will make a point you haven't considered.

If you still feel the way you do, just let her know that you did all this research, listened to her, and you still feel the same way. You want your BMs to be free to choose the dress that makes them feel the most beautiful and that fits their budget best. However, if she's still adamant, I agree with you to just pick something and let her have a small victory - it's not worth it to keep the disagreement going if you don't have a preference.
