Bra suggestions for open back bridesmaid dress?

Jessica, on July 28, 2016 at 12:07 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have suggestions for a bra that might work with this bridesmaid dress? The back is partially open. I am on the busty side and really need to wear an actual bra. I know that some ladies don't mind if their bra shows but I feel like it would look really awkward and tacky. Any advice?

Here is the style - not the color - of the dress

Honeslty the only thing i can think of is those stick on ones.

I know for me (double/triple D depending on the bra) it wouldnt work. Could you have cups sewn in?

Unfortunately I don't think sewn in cups would provide enough support. I'm a 32FF or thereabouts.

Did you talk to the bride about this prior to this dress being chosen?

Im a 34DD, my dress is backless.... I'm going to practice "taping" to see if it's even an option. You can google instructions or even on Pinterest. If that fails I'm hoping my seamstress can sew in some support.

Unfortunately no, I didn't talk to the bride about this specifically. I knew the back was low but I didn't realize it was THAT low. I didn't realize it would be a problem.

That's a tough one. Can you try a bra with a pretty back band that's meant to be seen?

Taping is crazy uncomfortable. I would really talk to a seemstress about a few options to add support.

@oliviaW I think at her cup size OP would be hard pressed to find a bralette that would work. I know I have yet to find one that actually supports.

I am a 34ddd on a good day, and realistically need to be and have been put in bras much larger. I requested to only try on dresses with straps.

Something went wrong because I fell in love with a strapless dress, was assured that the alteration lady would fit me into it so snug I wouldn't notice.

So I bought the dress, choosing not to spend the extra $200+ to add sleeves.

Met with the seamstress last weekend for my first fitting and she explained that no way could she secure my in it because I have too much to secure :-/

Ended up going with uncomfortable spaghetti straps because the backs too low for a bra. And I want my chest pretty much fully covered.

So be cautious what you buy with the hopes of it turning into something else.

I had a similar situation a while back. Have you tried something like this?

Talking to a seamstress is a good idea too.

I didn't open the picture because I'm on mobile and it's a pain in the butt. I got a strap from VS that works with any bra and it basically pulls down and lowers the back of the bra. I can get it Togo down to mid back. Would that work?

Maybe a seamstress can add a panel of fabric to shrink the keyhole?

Would the bride be ok with you wearing a different dress or does she want BMs in identical dresses? Is there time to order a dress in the designated color but of a style that works for you? Can you re-sell the dress you already bought?

    Thanks for the suggestions.

@Sarah - The BMs are wearing identical dresses and the wedding is next month.

@Melody, Katie, Katherine - I appreciate the ideas. The dress opening goes to about the small of my back so a solution needs to accommodate that.

Are you able to have an alteration done that lifts the back a little? If it were even an inch or two higher it would be much, much easier to find a supportive bra.

You could also consider having the back filled with some sort of skin-colored lining, like figure skating costumes, but that always looks a bit odd up close IMO.
