Boutonnieres without suits?!

Sarah, on April 14, 2011 at 10:03 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

OK ladies, I put in the flower order and then we decided afterwards that the groomsmen would not wear suits (the groom will. It is a garden and the bridesmaids are not very formal so we decided dress pants, a shirt, and tie was good for the guys). So that leaves me with 4 boutonnieres. I would like to have the groomsmen wear them anyway to balance the bridesmaids holding a single rose if this is possible. Can you wear a boutonniere on a dress shirt without looking ridiculous? if so WHERE would they wear it? Should I just try to change the flower order? What do you ladies think? thanks girls!

I think it depends on the style/flowers of bout. Some are too heavy for a shirt to hold up properly. Got any pics?

Spray roses. The groom will had a red and a white bud, but he is wearing a suit so that is fine. The groomsmen will have a single rose bud. Sorry I don't have pictures Smiley sad

You could always try it out on a dress shirt -- if it looks funny, give it to the fathers/grandfathers/ushers?

Fathers already have them. There are no ushers (due to being in a garden without seating). I like the idea of grandfathers/minister BUT then I would have to buy more corsages to balance out with their wives lol. It isn't a HUGE deal (i mean how expensive are boutonnierres after all lol). It is more the look of it I am wondering about. How can I try it ahead of time? Go find a rosebud and play around with it I guess?

I've seen it on dress shirts many times! You just go with smaller flowers so they're not as heavy.

I think small bud bout's will be ok. They should be small and light enough to work on just a shirt. I must say though, I'm not sure I like how it looks without the jacket. Here's some pics I found. What does your FS think?

My fiance doesn't have a clue LOL! He didn't even know what a boutenierre was previous to wedding planning. This is up to me and any advice I can get. I will talk to the groomsmen though and get THEIR opinions on the subject

I officiate a lot of casual beach weddings. A lot of the time, the men are not wearing jackets, but have boutonniers. Make sure it is light-weight, and pin it through the pocket where you have an extra layer of fabric. If the shirt does not have a left-breast pocket, it is really difficult to pin the flower to just the 1 layer of fabric.

Our groomsmen will also not be wearing jackets. I think it looks fine. Maybe try making one out of a silk flower in a similar style to what you ordered to see if you like the look.

Talk to the florist that is making the boutonnieres and let them know that your men will not be wearing suits. That way they know to make them small and light. Maybe they can make you something like this? a single small spray rose bud in a cute wired holder? just fiddleheads?
