Black dress at a wedding?

Laura, on May 8, 2010 at 10:43 PM Posted in Planning 0 29

Just curious-is it wrong to wear a black dress to a wedding? I noticed in another thread that people said it was a no no, but every wedding that I have been to I have seen girls wear black dresses...including me. Are you not suppose to wear them because you wear black to a funeral? I have never heard of this before so I was just wondering what is "proper."

I've definitely heard it, but I also think it's one of those old school etiquette rules that isn't really valid anymore. I always see people wearing black at weddings. I say it's cool as long as the style is appropriate.

I think this was a rule that has since gone out of date. There are a few people that still follow it, but I think the younger generations don't pay much attention to it.

The way I've heard it, it is only inappropriate anymore for the mother of the bride or groom to wear black, as it is a sign of disapproval of the marriage.

It's not inappropriate if you have a funeral afterward. No, totally kidding. I see nothing wrong with it if it's a cute, fun dress. Especially if it has some kind of detail, like silver... stuff. It's really an elegant color imo.

Yes I knew that it was a no no for the MOB and MOG to wear black. However I have never heard of guests not wearing black.

My grandma wore black to my brother's wedding and looked GORGEOUS! But then, my grandma's a classy lady.

Honestly, I do not have an issue with a black dress. Yes, the rule used to be "black dress for a funeral". But then there is that "little black dress" thing.

And of course, black is slimming. ;-)

My Mom was scared of wearing black to our wedding for fear someone would think she disapproves of us.. I'm encouraging her to wear black because it's what she's comfortable in! PLUS my BP is wearing black, so I see no harm in it!

I have worn black to many weddings. Today is the first time I had heard of it being a no-no, probably on the same thread you did. I think it is one more "tradition" our generation has decided to change!!

Times have changed. I just wore the same black dress to 2 weddings (2 months apart) but with a thin, purple belt right under my chest & a purple cardigan. The last picture is the grooms' friends & their girlfriends but it gives you an idea of more black at a wedding.

See I think that looks great... Ya know if you can't wear white, red, black, or the colors of the wedding good grief what the heck do ya wear.. you kinda start running out of options.. I just think if you don't wear the same color as the bride and your attire is tasteful go for it..

I have worn black to a wedding, it's very classy and understated and always looks nice. I love it so much, I'm having my bm's wear black dresses in my own wedding Smiley smile There's a huge different between wearing a l.b.d. and wearing this lol

For the "older" generation (ugh, hate that term now that I am officially over the age of 50), wearing black to an efternoon or evening function is considered elegant or chic. A simple black sheath adorned with pearls never goes out of style! The only time that I was ever aware it might be problematic is whan there is a black and white theme for the bridal party.

FH & me at my cousin's wedding in July (and I noticed, looking at the photos, that my aunt--not my cousin's mother--also wore a black dress with a multi-colored shawl):
