Birth control to skip period

Elizabeth, on January 12, 2015 at 9:54 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 22

Hey guys. So I have a couple period tracking apps on my phone and of course both of them are counting on me starting my period the day before my wedding. I want to avoid that at all costs and although I'm not a huge fan of birth control I will take it if I can skip my period for that week by using it.

Has anybody had any experience trying to skip their period and if so what kind of BC did you use? And how long had you been taking it? I don't know how this works lol.

Thanks ladies

Also just to mention...I planned my wedding way before I knew I'd be starting on my wedding date. I've been engaged for almost a year. So I had no idea Smiley sad

I do this all the time with my bc. I've been on the pill since I was 16 years old (10 years). I don't use the type that has you get your period every 3 months...I've heard those can cause a lot of spotting and I wanted more control than that (not locked down to every 3 months). I usually get my period but will skip it if it's not convenient for me - vacation, big event, etc. When I was in college I skipped it all the time! (so I could hook up with boys without my period- haha). Bc packs have a week of placebo pills for you to take during the week of your period. There's no medicine in them, it's just to keep you in the habit of taking a daily pill. It's simple- you just skip the placebo pills and start the next pack. You may experience spotting but I never do. It is completely safe for your body.

I've done this a few times, and planning on doing it again for my wedding. I'm on the pill and have been for about 10 years. Each pack has 3 weeks of pills and 1 week of iron/placebo which is your period week... when I want to skip, I take my three weeks, skip the iron/placebo pills, and move right on to the next pack. My friend has a NuvaRing, and does the same thing when she wants to skip, just puts a new one in instead of having a week off.

I have done the BC pill skip thing that Rosemary is saying (for vacations a few times). For me, though, it does cause a little bloat in my lower tummy when I do the 'skip' so time it early enough before the wedding.

I've done this and it works great. Instead of starting the inactive pills you just start your next pack. I do notice that my next period is a little heavier but it's worth it if you're going on vacation (or honeymooning ofcourse)

Thanks y'all this is really helpful! So does it matter how long in advance I start the birth control? I've never been on it before and I'm about 7 months out from my wedding

You need to get on the pill ASAP. I suggest an extended-cycle pill like Seasonale, which will give you your period every three months instead of every month.

But seriously-- schedule an appt with a gyno PRONTO. It can take a while for your period to regulate on BCP, and so you want to give as much time as possible.

Most kinds of "the pill" have a week of placebo pills (when you get your period) that you can skip in order to avoid your period. Your doctor would be able to tell you which one is best for you, and it's a good idea to start it at least a few months before the wedding so that your body has time to adjust so that it can be effective and you know you aren't having any problems with it.

You could also try the Depo-Provera shot- it lasts for 12 weeks and usually you have no periods with it. So you could potentially have it done a month or two before the wedding and then go back to not using it after it wears off.

If you do end up going with a hormonal method though, make sure you also talk to your doctor about when you want to get off of it- with many hormonal methods, it is recommended to use other birth control methods for a certain period of time after getting off of them, otherwise you can risk a miscarriage or other complications if you were to get pregnant right away.

Just go in and talk to your doctor- they can help you look at your options and decide which will be best for you!

I'm on the three month pill now, but have used the regular 28 day birth control pills in the past to skip and never had any problems. I would start doing it a little sooner than your wedding though, because the first time you do it you may have some breakthrough bleeding.

I've done it and my period will now be coming a week after my honeymoon Smiley smile It took about 3 months to get it right (and I've been on BC for 10+ years due to the irregularity of it. You should start tomorrow if you're trying to work on timing!

I'd start the pills really soon.....when your wedding comes just ignore the placebos and go on to the next pack.....It'll screw up your menstrual cycle for hey whatever as long as you don't have it for your wedding/HM, right??

This helps a lot. I was also curious about this. My period may start about two or three days after the wedding, which I'll just be starting my honeymoon and I don't want that. Is it too late if I try doing it a month before the wedding or should I start doing it now that I have about 5 months to go?

I have also talked to a lot of brides who, due to stress, either don't get their period for a while, or it comes and goes at random times in the last few months leading up to the wedding.

I have skipped my placebo pills but had VERY heavy spotting that whole week, and still felt like I was going to get my period. It would have been more pleasant for me to actually have my period. (side note, I have awesome periods to begin with, so for some, the heavy spotting and yuck feeling may be a better alternative)

The Depo shot was awesome. Loved not having to think about it on my wedding day. It wore off after our honeymoon but no small humans on the way just yet.

I would start the pills now. That way your body will be used to it by your wedding.

I did this. I started in November. It is a little wonky for me because it interacts with some other meds I'm on, but it looks like it will work out that it will come between the wedding and honeymoon! I can't wait to be done taking them though they really make me nauseous.

I've been on loestrin fe 24 for years now and have skippedy my period several times. you may still feel like you're getting pms symptoms but you shouldn't bleed. Maybe try skipping it 1x before the wedding so u have an idea of how your body will react. And Ive asked several gyno about it and they said it's fine as long you don't do it too often

Talk to your doctor about it. There are many different varieties of birth control pills. Some allow you to skip the placebo others don't. It depends on what the drugs in the pill are. This is really something to discuss with a doctor. What will work best can vary a lot between different people. If you don't have an ob-gyn, I would suggest going to planned parenthood they are great!

You probably should be on the pill now. You want to be in the habit of taking it and sometimes it can cause side effects you will need to get used to. Make sure your Dr. knows you are getting married in August.
