Birth control - go off before or after wedding?

Staci, on August 19, 2019 at 9:01 AM Posted in Planning 0 23
Hi everyone! Had a question I thought some brides could relate to. I’m 4 1/2 months out until my wedding and we want to have kids next year soon after the wedding. I’ve been on BC for 13 years. Would love to start trying immediately after wedding, but in retrospect a few more months isn’t huge if allows. For smoother wedding on my body. Does anyone have any advice on staying on it until after wedding or going off during? Mainly scared of acne or bad pms that could add extra stress! Thoughts on which approach you’ve seen is better?

This sounds like something you should talk to your obgyn about. I personally wouldn't do anything to drastically change my hormone levels this close to my wedding, but everyone is different.

I would wait until after the wedding so your body doesn't have additional hormonal shifts it needs to adjust to. It will also give you just a little bit of time post-wedding glow for just the two of you.

I personally would wait. Adjusting to new hormones can be a whole process, and I wouldn’t want to deal with that so close to and during my wedding!! Like PP said, if you go off right after the wedding, you would still have a chance for it to be just you two for a little while before baby hopefully comes!!

I'd wait till after. Going off hormonal birth control can actually boost your fertility, and you'll want to be able to drink on your wedding day.

Definitely talk to your OB about that. Everyone handles it differently. Like for me- the moment I got off of it my body felt better and my skin actually cleared up. It’ll take your body a bit to get adjusted without all the extra hormones.

I can relate! We are getting married in November and I had been on birth control for 14 years. I actually stopped birth control in May and it has simply been the best decision I have ever made!! I can't believe how much the hormones were effecting my body. I noticed a significant change in water weight/weight loss, and I don't PMS nearly as bad as I did on the pill (or other forms.. i've tried it all!) I do have acne, but not any worse than I had before.. I actually started vitamins from HUM nutrition and changed my makeup routine (wearing as minimal as possible) to combat it. I'm sure everyone has different experiences with coming off of it, but I am personally glad I made the decision too. I now question if I will ever use it again in the future. Best of luck to you!

Your story is SO similar to all my close friends and that is why I am so torn! Did you take the vitamins prior to going off it or after you went off? Thank you!

I started HUM nutrition’s “moody bird” the same time I went off. The only “negative” I noticed was I went from 3 day periods to 7 days.. but I track them regularly and am on “schedule” to not have my period on my wedding day!

Definitely wait until after! When you stop BC you may spot the first couple of months while your body filters out the hormones and if you already won't end up having your cycle during your wedding I wouldn't risk it.

Every person is different. I'd talk to your doctor. Some women seamlessly go off BC and are fine, others have weight gain or weight loss, acne, PMS, etc. I didn't want to add any additional stress to wedding planning. Prior to the wedding, I went and talked to my doctor and started on a proper pre-natal, and did genetic testing. In a few months, I'll go off birth control. My doctor said it can take several months to be out of your system.

I would suggest speaking with your OBGYN about this because everyone is different. A friend went off her pills a few days before the wedding (the pack ran out anyways) and got pregnant 2 days into their honeymoon! She jokes that it happened sooner than expected, but her son was worth the surprise.

I’d wait. I’m even skipping the inactive pills for the few months leading up (always lands around the time of the month when my wedding is taking place). You can stop taking it literally the week after. It’ll probably take a while for your body to adjust. You should be good in a few months.

I went off bc just shy of 2 years ago, due to health concerns.

    Wait until after.

I was on bc for nearly 14 years, and I had massive skin issues for over 6 months, I actually DROPPED weight, and I had major mood swings for a long time.

It took a long while for my cycle to normalize, and, even now, when I'm stressed (say, the month/week of my wedding???), my cycle will go haywire.
