Bed Bugs, Need Advice Please!

dawn, on November 8, 2015 at 5:51 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

My uncle, cousin, and her 2 daughters all live together and we know they have bed bugs without the means to deal with them appropriately. As this is my mom's brother I feel badly not inviting them to the wedding, but I also don't want to expose ourselves and our guests to the beg bugs. Any advice on tips to handle this situation would be appreciated. (giving them money to get it taken care of would not be effective in this situation do to the area in which they live, as many neighbors and people who visit them also have beg bugs)

Oof. Ok, so I live in Brooklyn and have dealt (a long time ago) with an infestation in the building I live in. I've got more experience with them then I'd like to...

Is your wedding local or destination? If local, and the only exposure your other guests will have to them is at the wedding, you should go ahead and invite them. The chance that they will spread them to other people just by person to person contact is VERY low - basically nonexistent, despite the (very reasonable) panic that people feel about them. If it's destination, though, and there is a likelihood of their luggage being in contact with other guests' then that's a possible issue.

    Gah, how unfortunate.

I would agree with luggage. That could be very very bad. Seems like a sticky situation.

I would play it safer than sorry, unless you or your mom really wants them there.

A relative ran into this situation too and could not afford to hire an exterminator, so followed this method: www.wikihow.com/Get-Rid-of-Bed-Bugs

Please keep in mind one has to be vigilant. As far as people visiting who may/maynot be carriers, one thing comes to mind is cover things in a light plastic.

The truth is that most of us are in contact with people who have bed bugs every single day. Risk of transmission is extremely low unless you're sleeping in their bed. It'll be fine. I wouldn't not invite family because of this. Seriously, the risk is so low that their exclusion for this is not warranted.

Are you not inviting them just because of the bed bug issue? That seems strange...is the wedding in your home? Would they be staying at your house? If not, I'm sorry but I don't understand the concern regarding exposure.

I totally understand wanting to be cautious and if it is destination that's something to think about but the risk is extremely minimal as long as it's just person to person contact. I wouldn't be too concerned.
