Beach House Wedding

Bri, on January 8, 2020 at 1:16 PM Posted in Planning 5 26
Hey ladies! Getting married this October at a beautiful ocean front event home in my home town in North Carolina. The ceremony will take place on the beach and the reception at the house. We can’t afford a wedding coordinator so I’m starting to think of the timeline, how to go about all the decorations and how to set up the back yard surrounding the pool for the reception. I live in Denver so I have to figure all this out from afar (and it’s giving me major anxiety). We’re doing an unconventional reception with several stations of heavy hor d’eurves in lieu of a formal, sit down meal. So while there will still be tables, there will not be enough for everyone to sit at one time. And god forbid, but there’s plenty of indoor and covered outdoor space if it rains.

Im curious if anyone else has done something similar. Any advice on things that have gone well or not gone well with a beach wedding? Small nuances that I may not have considered? And decoration tips/pictures!!! We’re planning on stringing bistro lights from the top deck across the back yard... but that’s as far as I’ve made it. Our theme is lavender and sage and I’d like decorations to include lots of greenery, terrariums, candles, etc.
I’ve included some photos of the house for reference. Looking forward to hearing any and all ideas. TIA!

I researched the venue you are looking at and there are lots of things you need to take into consideration.

Are you having children at this wedding? Children can be hard to supervise especially at a wedding so a pool could be dangerous.

Are you having traditional dances or anything like that? If so is there space and will everyone be able to see you?

Noise restrictions? Some places have certain noise restrictions especially with the places being so close together.

Parking? Is there enough parking or any restrictions on parking?

It also says no smoking so do you have a plan to enforce that?

I also see that the company you are renting the house through has on their website that you have to register with them if you are hosting a wedding have you done that?

I also see that wedding liability insurance may need to be purchased so have you looked into that?

If you plan on having more than 100 people, that is something you will have to talk to them about?

I also would highly reconsider not having enough seating. It isn't right to expect guests to stand or share seats.

I have included some decor for a wedding involving a pool.

Thanks so much for all the advice! And the pictures are great! We’re actually having a kid free wedding so the pool safety is not a concern. I think were going to do several large round tables with chairs and several of the taller standing type tables. We’re expecting about 75 guests and I’m afraid if there were seated tables for that many people then there would be no room for anything else. I haven’t thought much about the traditional dances yet, so that’s definitely something to consider! Would it be inconsiderate to have people both sitting and standing? This house was designed for weddings and the noise restrictions take place at 10pm, so that shouldn’t be a problem! And the smoking restriction refers to inside the home, so I’m not worried about that either. Thanks so much!!

I think it would be rude to expect some people to stand while others can sit. Everyone should have their own seat.

Oops, I missed a few of your points! We have informed the company that this is for a wedding and already paid the necessary additional fees/liability insurance. And there is a large public parking lot next door that is free to use for all our guests!

I assume you've told the home owner you are throwing the event, and how many guests you anticipate? I would place as many tables as you can underneath the covered area so you are prepared in case it rains. Is there space inside? I'd put tables there too if there is, especially if it gets cold at night.

Ok I’ll keep that in mind! We’re a pretty lively group so I’m hoping there will be more dancing and less sitting!

Oh good. It sounds like you have the big stuff covered. I would just think about the seating arrangements a little more as it would be nice to provide seating for each person.

There’s not a great picture on the site to reflect the indoor space but this gives you an idea. There’s more space to the right and left. The rental company said we’re free to move the furniture out and put whatever we would want in its place!

Maybe the owner's of the house can recommend a good company for table rentals that would also set up everything for you?

What about seating like this? Maybe see if you could rent cheap couches or something. Or long tables with chairs on both sides. It looks like that would provide a lot of seating.

I’m familiar with the company that most weddings use that have anything and everything we could possibly need when it comes to tables, chairs, etc. They’ll deliver everything the day before and our close friends and family will be staying at the house the week leading up to the wedding so we will be doing all the setting up/decorating. 😅

Those long tables look like they seat a ton! Maybe we could set up something like that along the thin grassy area on the side of the house and then more round tables under the covered area. And could even look into some of the couches and informal seating for the two decks. I love that!

They do look like they could sit a ton. I would definitely take advantage of the two decks for seating. I think the informal seating gives a nice cozy feel, but is also a way to provide extra seating.

Bumping this. All the pool decor looks awesome from previous posters! Great ideas! We're also having an obx wedding in Southern Shores and can't afford a coordinator. At a loss for decorating. We'll be taking long, rectangle tables down with us to set up for our dessert bar and "make your own cocktail" bar since we won't be having a bartender. We'll only have about 30ppl there, but between the indoor seating, the deck seating, and down at the pool, everyone should have a place to sit. We're just having bbq, then heading off to Manteo with our bridal party for a sunset cruise. Also doing a beach wedding. Have no plan b if it rains 😂. I'm not sure how formal your reception will be, but we're having yard games like cornhole, volleyball, beer pong for in the pool, and a night time ring toss that I found on the internet using bottles and glowsticks. Idk, gives us something to do lol. Are you renting the bistro lights, or have you bought them? I'd like to rent if possible. Any suggestions?
Also, we plan to start setting up our tables and decorating the day before the wedding. We have our wedding rehearsal at 11a, rehearsal dinner at 5. All of our friends who are staying with us are more than happy to help us set up and decorate. I'm sure you have a great support system as well who would love to help. Are you doing wedding favors? I have no idea what to do. We'll be down in March for our marriage license. I was thinking about shopping at super wings to find something nice. Idk! So stressful! Sorry for long comment!

I’m relieved I’m not the only one going through these struggles😂😂 Girl it is A LOT to think about lol. I love the idea of yard games! We like to party so I think that would be a hit! We’re planning on having a couple kegs, a couple signature cocktails, plus wine and champagne. My fiancé used to do catering when we lived on the OBX so I’m hoping we can call in a favor for someone to bartend for tips, free drinks and a place to crash🤞 Check out Metro Rental - they have several styles of bistro lights for rent! We haven’t figured out our wedding favors yet. I saw this on Pinterest though and thought it would be cute, affordable, and something people would actually use.
