Bar close during dinner?

Is this maybe a regional thing? What is all of your experience with this?

Our venue did it, but we were able to add wine service during the time they took their break.

I'm in NY and have never seen the bar close during dinner. At my venue there is table service for wine during dinner but the bar remains open for anyone wanting a mixed drink or cocktail.

So it must be an IL thing for sure!

    Any other states?

I am in NY, I have seen bars close, but wine during dinner. I think it is a know your crowd type thing. I think the Four Weddings show is the rudest thing around. It encourages people to speak poorly about other weddings. The rule I was raised with was once your partake of anyone's hospitality, you do not criticize.

I'm from IL as well and all the venues we looked at had the bar closing during dinner, and then wine service at dinner.

I have heard of this before. Maybe east coast thing ? I think they don't want people to keep getting up and down during this time

I went to a wedding in new hampshire where this happened. there was a state law that they could not have an open bar for more than 4 or 5 hours (can't remember the details) so they closed it for an hour or so during dinner.

it wasn't the end of the world. we just grabbed a drink before it closed to have during dinner.

Based on the comments, it's definitely an Illinois thing!

I'm in the Minneapolis area, I work in the events industry, and I have never heard of this other than reading it on here. So if you want a cocktail or a beer during dinner you are supposed to just know to horde them at your seat and let them get warm and gross over the next hour-plus? That sounds like a terrible system.

I saw the same thing but never saw it in person. If this is the case for yours I would just make sure people know if it is not something you are used to.

I'm also from the Midwest, but all the weddings I've been to have closed the bar during dinner, but hand poured wine. It's always seemed like a normal thing for me. We had to option of closing down during dinner or having cocktail hour appetizers for our final venue, but yeah all the venues we looked at closed down during dinner as well

Were in the Western New York region and most venues here the bar closes during dinner for an hour. So a 4 hour package would be 1 hour for cocktails, close for dinner then 3 hoirs for dancing/reception. Some packages offer wine/champagne during dinner or you can pay extra to keep the bar open. It may be a regional thing. I know most of the time when the bar closes its when the bartenders take their scheduled breaks as per state laws and such. Pretty much every wedding ive been to this has been the case.

Definitely sounds like an Illinois thing. Out of 29 weddings over 3 years from RI to SC and in CA (and many more before then!), I've never seen the bar close during dinner!

My venue does this. But I have the option of adding the open bar which I'm inclined to do. I'm kind of annoyed they will only do signature drinks during cocktail hour though.

My venue typically closes the bar for dinner, but I told them I don't mind if it stays open. I live in the midwest.
