Bar close during dinner?

Spaghetti, on July 1, 2017 at 11:19 AM Posted in Planning 0 69

I was watching Four Weddings on TLC and the brides were shocked when the bar closed during dinner. When I looked at venues this was the case at all of them. The venue we booked has the bar closing for an hour and a half during dinner and then serves either wine or champagne. After dinner it opens again.

Is this maybe a regional thing? What is all of your experience with this?

I have never heard of the bar closing during dinner. I live in the Midwest and all the venues I looked at, the bar is open all night.

The bar is always closed during dinner (with the exception of wine) where I come from.

I've never been to a wedding where the bar didn't close during dinner. I live in Illinois. Not sure if it's regional or not.

Don't worry @Spaghetti, I've never seen a wedding where the bar was open during dinner. Unlimited wine/champagne during the meal is perfectly normal and people in our area know to get a drink (or two) before dinner starts if they don't like wine.

Yikes, that's an odd custom to this southern girl! At least they serve wine!

Yes, very common at the weddings I've attended. However, there is always wine service.

I'm in IL as well, and every venue we looked at said they closed the bar during dinner.

The venue we chose won't do open bar during cocktail hour either other than champagne.

In our region/social circle, we have open dancing between the 4 or more courses that are served. The bar may close for 15 minutes, after the cocktail hour and when the guests are entering the reception room - plus the bridal party entrance, but that's about it.

Some venues require the bar to be shut a half hour or hour before the reception end, for a sober-up time, but that depends on the length of the reception.

I.e. our venue - or was it the state law? - had a 5-hour maximum open bar. We added extra time,to the length of our reception, so the bar closed a half hour before the end of the reception.

I think it has to do with bar packages. Our venue only offers consumption so you better believe they are not shutting down. They want all the money they can get.

The bar usually closes for dinner (about a half hour) where I'm from (MI)

If you have an open bar for 5 hours but your reception is 7 hours they will close the bar during dinner to save time for later. It depends on the area. My area we generally have an open bar for 7-8 hours so the bar stays open all night until 1am. Wine being served while it's closed is acceptable

I don't think it has anything to do with bar packages. We wanted it open more hours and they said they could add it on to the end (make the reception longer), but not during dinner (and in our case, during cocktails either. I asked)

I'm in NJ...we'll have wine service during dinner but our bar will still be open. I've never been to a wedding where the bar closed during dinner.

Every wedding I've ever been to in my life has closed the bar during dinner. There's always been wine service during dinner. I'm in northern IL.

I have been to many weddings, mostly throughout the Midwest and I have never seen a bar closed during dinner.
