awesome Miss Manners quote about RSVPs

Cabell, on April 29, 2010 at 4:24 PM Posted in Planning 0 17

If you've had to track down RSVP stragglers, I think you'll enjoy this...

"Miss Manners... considers it an unfortunate concession that hosts even need to state that they would like a response (in sensible times, guests could figure that out for themselves), and finds it distasteful that they feel they must provide the response themselves, in the form of prestamped cards or a voice-mail drop. Especially since such techniques don't work. People who are not polite enough to answer invitations are still not going to answer, even if you lie down in front of them and beg them to kick you once for yes and twice for no."

--Judith Martin, Miss Manners' Guide to Domestic Tranquility, Chapter 7: Entertaining: The Social Contract, p.218

    LOVE IT!!....

does ms. manners say anything about guests who change their food order after they have RSVP'd? I have a few who didn't order beef b/c they thought it would be a cheap cut, but when they found out it would be filet mignon, they suddenly change their mind! (all on FH's side, of course )

Ha! Our RSVP by date is tomorrow... and out of about 130 guests, only 41 have bothered to RSVP... and over ten of those did it by word of mouth rather than actually using our website as requested. There are a few that I know aren't coming, but they've not bothered to tell me directly... they've let other people tell me.

@Not a Bridezilla---I would make a point to gladly change their options to beef... except they would all be given the cheap cut that they feared. When they asked about it, just tell them the ones that RSVP's on time got the good stuff. The ones that changed their minds can get whatever we want to give them...after all, they didn't have to pay for it anyway. (Sorry... the evil twin spoke up again. LOL)

I do believe about the kicking part thanks to all the horror stories you all have talked about regarding RSVPs!!! So frustrating! Don't they remember what it was like when they got married!!

Maybe I'm an oddball...But almost every single one of my guests RSVP'd...I only had to call like 2 or 3 people. Just good luck maybe? lol

@Lisa K-wow, you're lucky. I think you are the exception and not the rule going by all the stories I've heard here, lol!

Haha, oh miss manners. I just received an invite in the mail an on Facebook for the same wedding. They asked us to "immediately" RSVP online and then to ALSO RSVP on facebook so they would know that we got the printed invite. I'm all for RSVPing, but why do I have to do it twice? If I RSVP on their website, OBVIOUSLY I got the invite?!?!

I had to call lots for the bridal shower, but none for the wedding, the only wedding rsvp problems I had was a family of 3 adding a 4th person and a family of 4 adding 3 people

Ann Marie: I kind of understand that because we did a FB invite for our engagement party, and it made it easier to keep track of who was actually coming because of the way FB does RSVPs. But still, making people RSVP in two places is stupid. I handled updating RSVPs from FB on the WW tools.

Lisa: I'm jealous of your well-bred social circle! :p

I did my RSVP's online, not too many guests and destination wedding. I had to go on and decline for about 40 people who I knew were not coming, but just too lazy to go on the site. I had to do it because it was driving me crazy looking at the "no responses". Now it's all cleaned up and I have my final count. Although we went to a really good friends BBQ on Saturday and met a cool guy from South Africa who we drunkenly invited (he is good friends with our friends). Lo and behold, the dude booked his hotel room and flight on Monday because he said we were sooo much fun and glad we drunkenly invited him! I'm glad we did, he was a lot of fun!

Thanks for making my day. That's the funniest thing I've read in awhile. But oh so true.
