Average cost of alterations?

Sammy, on November 7, 2013 at 4:20 PM Posted in Planning 0 29

I'm trying to get VERY detailed with my budget, so I might be asking a ton of "average cost" questions- bear with me Smiley smile

What did your alterations cost you? Did you have a lot to do on your dress? Might be helpful if some shorter brides chime in Smiley smile

Stalking this! But I do know it's different for all and depends on what you need done and the material, setup of your dress.

My alterations will be free because that is what the boutique I bought it at offers.

I will have it taken in at the bust area and also it will have to hemmed quite a bit at the bottom because I'm very short! I'm wearing taller heels though so that should help.

NotFroofy is 5'1", and her alterations (shortening the dress and adding a bustle) were about $100. We used an independent seamstress, which tends to be a lot less expensive than using a bridal salon.

I'm scared as crap about alteration prices. Alfred Angelo and the retailers charge a lot. I know the V neck needs to be altered a tad on mine on the shoulders. It also may need to be hemmed at the bottom and taken in at the waste. Will most likely go to a family friend or independent alterations shop for that.

FutureMrsClark, great date choice! Smiley smile And that sounds super lucky!!

2d Bride, thank you! I will definitely check out independent seamstresses first! I'm 4'10 so even with my heels I'm barely 5'2!!

I paid $170 for the bustling that needs to be done. Probably could have gotten it done a little bit cheaper, but my dress is not with me (it's in St. Louis and I'm Dallas) and I don't have a lot of time to hunt around for the cheapest, not that I wouldn't want to, but I'm letting the bridal shop, Brides by Demetrios, do the alterations...it's their dress and their storing it for me until my last fitting, so it gives me a peace of mind as well.

Other than that, I didn't need any other alterations.

I'm in Pittsburgh. My total was $326. I had the (beaded) bust taken in, 7 or 8 point bustle, and had it hemmed (i'm 5'2").

I am 5'1" and needed my the length altered (a lot even with 4" heels), taken in a bit, the shoulder strap (one shoulder dresss) taken in, the bustle created, and a sash hemmed. My alterations were about $275. There were quite a few thinsg to be done with the dress, but I was still shocked at the price. The dress was purchased and alterations done at David's Bridal. It was pricey, but I am extremely pleased with their work.

I had my dress taken in, neckline changed to a sweetheart, and a bustle added for $170 with an independent seamstress.

    Edit: and cups sewn in!

Ugh I'm too embarassed to say. I had it shortened, bustled, taken in twice, cups added along with a sweetheart neckline. I'll only say it was more than $500.

My store told me that the average cost is $300 but I don't expect it to be that much. I am lucky that I fit into a size 4 without major alterations.

Shorter bride here! I'm 4'11", so hopefully this will help you! Smiley smile

I'm getting my dress altered at David's Bridal, so it's likely more expensive than some. That said, the dress is satin, has a LOT of beading/crystals on the bodice, and this is what I'm having done: Zipper removed and a corset put in the back, hemmed, of course, about 6" or so, which will require appliques to be removed and repositioned, etc, and a ballroom bustle put in, which involves like 12-15 hooks, I believe, and pulls the train up underneath the dress to make it look like there never was a train. It's going to cost me about $315 for everything. Smiley smile

    Hope that helps!

I had mine at David's Bridal too i think it was about $260. I had to get it shortened and taken in all the way down on both sides (it was pretty huge on me), had it bustled and had to have new hooks sewn in inside bc my mom accidentally broke them off lol

$163, bustle and sewing in longline bra so it's a part of my dress. The bustle is 16 points so it was $$$$. Seeing the bra in was $20.

My dress fit right off the mannequin.

Mine is $300. Bustle, taking in the top around my boobs and hemmed a bit.

Mine fits like it was made for me, but I hope it's too big in a few months so I will have to have it altered because I have lost weight.

I budgeted $300 because I'm petite, which will require a lot of work. If you're the type of person who can wear clothes off of the rack, then you can get away with less.

I was a very lucky girl when it came to alterations I didn't need alterations. I'm just doing the bustle, they're charging me $60
