Atypical Father Daughter Songs

Mrs. Kline (Sass), on December 30, 2009 at 6:41 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

I know there is a list but i have gone through what seems like hundreds and nothing seems right... my father and i had a rough relationship (read that abusive) but he has gotten help and is trying very hard to rebuild the realtionship we didnt have ... i really dont want a song like i loved her first or others like that because that just reminds me of him NOT being there for me. I am sure there is something out there if you have any ideas they would be greatly appreaciated thanks

I'm dancing to "Delaney Talks to Statues" by Jimmy Buffet. Little on the odd side, but awesome song.

I also don't want something that talks about a good childhood relationship. I'm doing My Father's Eyes by Amy Grant but if you're not religious then maybe something like "you're gonna miss this" which talks about not appreciating your time with your children until they've grown up and it's gone. Kind of sad, but not as hokey and "love my perfect daddy" as some of the other ones.

I didnt always have the greatest relationship with my dad either but we are working on it now. So, similar to your situation. I am using Little Wonders by Rob Thomas.

I didn't have much of a relationship with my father when I was young, but that had more to do with my mother taking my sister and I and moving far away and trying to take away his visitation rights than him not wanting to be there for us. (long story short, my mother had mental and drug problems and didn't like my father insisting on trying to get her help.) Well as a young teen I moved out of my mother's house and moved in with my father after trying to get by on my own and realizing that I couldn't finish school without a steady home to go home to. Ever since then the two of us have grown close and now we talk almost every other day. When even FH is tired of listening to me ramble on about wedding plans, he is there to lend me an ear and give helpful advise. he's a huge part of my son's life as well as mine now and I've been trying to find the perfect song for us.

Honestly, without getting into details, my father and I haven't had the greatest relationship but I have chosen to dance to "Butterfly Kisses" by Bob Carlisle. Although the majority of the words are not on point for us, I chose it simply for the words in the song, "In all that I've done wrong I know I must have done something right to deserve a hug every morning and butterfly kisses at night."

You were my first love, always there for me

You taught me how to walk and how to dream

    God gave me your eyes

But it was you who taught me how to see

Now I can stand on my own

But I know that you'll never let go

    I'll always be your baby

No matter how the years fly by

The way you love me made me

Who I am in this world

I'm a woman now, not a little girl

    Wherever this life takes me

    I'll always be your baby

You are my hero and that will never change

You still can dry my tears with just a smile

    The one I've leaned on

From my first steps to walking down the aisle

Now there's another man in my life

But I know by the look in your eyes

    I'll always be your baby

No matter how the years fly by

The way you love me made me

Who I am in this world

I'm a woman now, Not a little girl

    Wherever this life takes me

    I'll always be your baby

    Your faith, your love

    And all that you believe

Have come to be the strongest part of me

And I will always be your baby

Above are the words to the song. I knew it was the one the first time I heard it.

I am thinking of "Bridge over Troubled Water" by Simon & Garfunkel. My Dad & Both love them and the words seem appropiate.

I recommend "Always On My Mind" by Willie Nelson - I'm very much considering it for my father-daughter dance.
