Are you able to take a deep breath in your wedding dress?

smithereens, on January 17, 2014 at 1:21 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 32

Hey everyone. I just wanted some feedback on how fitted your wedding dress is going to be. Are you supposed to be totally comfortable in it, or should it be expected to feel a little constrained? I wear a size 6 or 8 in pants, and bought an off the rack size 6 dress with the intent of letting it out. I can get in it and tie the corset back so it looks perfect, but at this point I can only take shallow breaths. The seamstress is going to let it out to a size 8 which will definitely help, but I still think it's going to be snug.

How will your dress fit?

Uhh yes. I was also able to dance, sit, eat a delicious dinner and feel comfortable in my dress. I loved my dress.

Yeah, that's probably not good. I could breath normally, but by the end of the night my long line was jabbing me in the hip. I had marks on my skin for 2 days after the wedding.

Yes, we had a bride here that had a dress that was tad snug, and the seamstress said it will loosen up throughout the day. She was so uncomfortable she had to change by the reception. You 100% absolutely feel COMFORTABLE in your dress.

@We'llAlwaysHaveParis, I feel you on having the marks on your skin, haha. I had marks on my stomach after only having had the dress on for 45 minutes last night. I think taking it up a size will be good, I'm just used to wearing t-shirts, nothing fitted or clingy ever.

Yep! I can breathe. I read that dress sizes aren't exactly the same as other clothing sizes so that might be why your wedding dress is an "8".

Short breaths can make you feel REALLY light headed after a little while. You won't be getting enough oxygen and seriously could pass out or make yourself sick. You want to make sure you are able to breathe normally at the very least!

Like AndreaLily, I can dance/eat/and if I tried hard enough maybe do a little yoga in my fit and flare!

It was mandatory for it to be comfortable.

I could breathe in mine, but after the ceremony and a bunch of pictures I had to get my girls to loosen it at my parent's before the reception so that I could have a bit more space for food and dancing.

@Paris. I also had lines on my body for 2 days afterwards.

Can you wear it a little while and see how you feel? I wear corsets in real life in general, and sometimes when I very first put it on I can only take relatively shallow breaths, but it loosens up quite quickly.. Is it a corset top, like a real corset with boning and thick material? My dress is a real corset top, and I got it a size smaller than recommended (they had the size recommended in the store, and I knew I could go a size down.)

Sometimes you can wear a corset that's too small and just have more lacing show. Why did they tighten it to where it was? Did the modesty panel end? Was there not enough material to lace? They can usually get a longer ribbon and add more to the modesty panel.

I know it does you no good right now, but it's a terrible idea to get a dress size based on your street size- you should do it with measurements.

@Blonedie123 I know you're supposed to go up a size or two than your normal pant size. I bought the dress off the rack so I couldn't order the correct size. I bought it because it was super freaking cheap and I had intention all along to have the seamstress let it out. As embarrassing as it is, I have no idea if it's a true corset back. All I know about the dress is that it's ivory, empire cut, and it's pretty. They tied it the way they did because it made a long "V" in the back down to my butt. They could loosen it, but then it wouldn't be the perfect "V." I'm sure it will all fit fine once the seamstress lets it out, I just wanted some thoughts on whether I should be so comfortable it's like I'm wearing sweat pants on my wedding day or if that is not what a wedding dress is supposed to feel like. Know what I mean?

Make sure you can breath!!!! Seriously you do not want to pass out at your wedding and your dress is going to make you hotter than you are use to and that combined with only shallow breathing could making you end up on those terrible wedding horror TV shows.

I'm even going so far as to not wear a bra. I'm getting those sticky boob things so i don't have under wire jabbing me all night. Strapless bras are the worst.

Strapless bras are the worst! I literally have no bust and I'm not wearing a bra. They are sewing in some cups.

Nono. You don't get a size up or down from your pant size- if I did that I'd be wearing a gigundo dress because i'm very bottom heavy (and my dress has an open hip skirt). Your street size has nothing to do with your wedding dress size.

Generally with sample dresses you try them on to see if they would fit. I don't think that corsets can usually be "let out"- as far as I know, they don't have any material to "let", although a seamstress would know that better than I. In theory, you would still have the "v" with the corset, but just a bigger one. You would know if it has boning- just look in the dress- are there little hard pieces that go up and down? Or, could you post a picture?

In the end, you should probably just bring it to a seamstress and see what she says. I'm gonna guess she will just add to the modesty panel, and you may have a bigger "V" than you woud like. If you wore it for 45 min and you still couldn't breathe, it is definitely too tight.
