Are you able to take a deep breath in your wedding dress?

Hey everyone. I just wanted some feedback on how fitted your wedding dress is going to be. Are you supposed to be totally comfortable in it, or should it be expected to feel a little constrained? Hey everyone. I just wanted some feedback on how fitted your wedding dress is going to be. Are you supposed to be totally comfortable in it, or should it be expected to feel a little constrained? I wear a size 6 or 8 in pants, and bought an off the rack size 6 dress with the intent of letting it out. I can get in it and tie the corset back so it looks perfect, but at this point I can only take shallow breaths. The seamstress is going to let it out to a size 8 which will definitely help, but I still think it's going to be snug.

How will your dress fit?

Mine is boned in the bodice so it's snug against my ribs, but not so tight that I can't breathe...

@Blondie123...Oh boy, now you're practically speaking Spanish. I had my fitting last night. She is going to take it out on the sides. If that doesn't allow me enough oxygen intake, she said she won't be able to take it out from the sides anymore because there isn't enough fabric (as you mentioned). She will have to do something in the front. I don't remember the name of the thing she will have to dismantle. I think it is boned. So it should be snug as Shannon H. said. Good! Question has been answered! Don't worry, by the end of all of this, it will be let out enough for me to breathe.

Also dress size really doesn't depend on street size, I'm a size 8 dress normally my bridal gown is a size 14 (yes, 14! and it fits)

It depends 100% on the designer's pattern system. Sizes are just a number for ordering purposes.

I made sure before I bought my dress that I could sit comfortably in it. I can breathe in mine nicely.

This is why I'm getting a second dress for the reception. Mine is so big and heavy that it has to be tied tight to stay up. I know it won't be comfortable the whole night.

I didn't have any problems. I didn't wear a corset under either of my dresses though

I also had marks on my stomach just after she cinched it in for first round of alterations! I am thinking it won't be quite as snug though, I will find out in 2 weeks!

Ok- LOL! Well, if the seamstress says it will work out it will. Whew. You freaked ME out for a second there. Stupid vanity sizing.

With shallow breathing, you're putting yourself on the verge of hyperventilating.

I'm sewing mine, and I'm intending on having some positive ease (ie, not skin-tight, and not squishing me either)...particularly since you need to have at least an inch of positive ease to get in and out if you're not adding zippers/lacing/buttons (which I'm not).

And yeah, mall sizing is all a pack of lies. It's vanity sizing--they put on smaller numbers so you feel better. A "standard" (as defined in the early 20th century) 8 corresponds to a 0 or a 2 at mall stores, depending on which store. I think I wear a 4 in mall sizing (I'm not sure, it's been a few years since I bought clothes), but in standard pattern sizing that all the pattern manufacturers and dress makers use, I'm a 14 or 16.
