Are wedding planners supposed to charge sales tax?

P2BE, on November 27, 2015 at 6:26 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

I got a quote from a wedding planner for day of coordination which includes the quoted price plus sales tax but none of my other vendors that are service oriented are charging tax. Are your wedding planners charging tax? P.s. I'm in the state of Florida

My DOC is not charging sales tax. I think it's kind of odd to charge sales tax for that.

Perhaps your other vendors built the taxes into their quote? Everyone pays taxes.

In NJ, services aren't taxed, just products. (and not all products) Maybe Nancy will weigh in, but I'd want a definitive answer about why she is charging sales tax.

I agree with Celia. Products are taxed for sure but not all services are taxed.

Sales tax is not allowed to be included -- it has to be itemized separately.

FL does not have sales tax on services, only products. If she bought something for you and paid the sales tax (instead of submitting the form which says she does not pay it and will charge you for it) then she would charge you the sales tax and submit it to the State.

This is one reason we don't sell anything ceremony related (sand, etc)... dealing with sales tax is just too crazy.

Services are not taxed. Period. Only items.

I'm in CT, and many services are taxed. However, none of our wedding vendors charged a separate sales tax. If they were subject to it, I assume they built it into their prices. Just depends on state tax laws.

If they include any "things" in their package, they have to charge sales tax on those "things." Services are not taxed.

Each state is different. In PA they just put (or are about to put a tax) on planning services Smiley sad

I am trying to hire a coordinator for the day of the wedding to just set up, they are not bringing anything, I am not renting anything from them. Everything has been purchased myself. All they are doing is setting up and I am being charged tax… is this normal?
