Are wedding bands necessary?

Katie, on July 5, 2016 at 11:55 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 27

I wanted to get a poll and see what people thought about wedding bands being a necessity or optional. I'm kind of weird and the idea of one side looking "bigger" and not symmetrical would drive me nuts. Plus it's also yet another cost and something I'm really not dying to have. What are your thoughts on wedding bands?

It's your choice, really. If you and your future spouse don't want them then there's no reason to get them.

I was debating whether or not to just have my engagement ring and that be all. I wear no jewelry (besides that ring) and am not sure if I really need it. I am going to go looking just to see what it would look like before I make my decision though.

I just like the look of my engagement ring by itself. FH will get his band but I'm just not sold on getting one for myself. I just didn't know if it were "frowned upon". So many traditions to keep up with!

I love my e-ring so I got a plain white gold band to go with it. Definitely not frowned upon to not get a band, I just wanted something that I could wear when I didn't want to wear my e-ring (traveling, laundry etc).

Im sure you will get some people that say that you absolutely have to get a band. But this is your marriage, and how you choose to symbolize that union is totally up to you and your FH. Smiley smile

ETA: Im also generally not into the idea of tradition for the sake of tradition (i.e., we should do it this way because thats how it has always been done mentality).

Its completely up to you. I seriously considered just wearing my E-ring alone at first as I really liked it alone. I eventually decided to get a band, but you don't have to. In fact, a couple of jewellery store clerks told me that it seems like more and more women are opting to only wear only their E-rings.

It up to you! You can get the wedding guard though. Those look really pretty and add a lot to your ring.

I thought I would never want a band either because I like that my ring is so thin but then I found one that went well and was equally thin. I would say try some on before deciding, but you definitely don't need one. I do think guys should have something though...

UO, the band represents your marriage and commitment. The e ring just means you're intended or engaged.

If anything, the band is *way* more important. Both FH and I will be getting them.

She will be just as committed and married if she chooses to use her e-ring as her wedding band. She can take it off for the ceremony and he can put it back on for the ring portion of the ceremony. Ta da, dual purpose.

To me, yes it's necessary. The symbolic meaning is important to me - there's a reason the tradition of a wedding band endures across cultures and over hundreds of years.
