Are double wedding bands just for your anniversary??

Ariel, on January 10, 2017 at 1:56 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

Hello everyone I have a question. My fiance wants to get me double wedding bands, you know the ones that are connected. I told my mother and she said that they were only for your 20th anniversary. I really like the idea of my finger having a little more sparkle to it. Lol

I believe this is called a guard, and no, they are not "just for your 20th anniversary".

I have a friend that got married not that long ago (maybe a month ago) and she has a double band around her engagement ring. I would say whatever you and your FH decide

This is what I was wanting for my ring if I get a band at all. I've never heard of the 20th anniversary thing though.

Our ring lady referred to it as a ring enhancer. FH proposed to me with my ring & ring enhancer and we will add a single band at the wedding! i've also never heard of the 20th anniversary thing!

Traditionally, yes, diamond and/or double bands are considered anniversary bands and they're gifted on major anniversaries. However, things change and now having double wedding bands is a "thing" and it's personal preference.

UO but I agree with your mom: the second band is gifted on a major anniversary. I feel like wearing two immediately is just an excuse to flash more diamonds

I joke with FH that he can buy me a second band when we have our first child. I think traditionally it would mark a significant anniversary but I know that some people choose to stack a few bands as their wedding band.

I knew a lady whose husband added another large diamond every 10 years (10th anniv., 20th anniv., 30th anniv., etc.).

The double band is MEANT to be an anniversary band or a gift for when you have children. The "trend" seems to be to have 2 bands, which is honestly just a excuse to wear more diamonds. My husband would never let me make a frivolous purchase like that without a good reason!

Not all enhancers have diamonds on them. I think the purpose was originally meant as an anniversary but it is more a trend/style now.

@MrsSkiToBe and @annakay511 calling it an excuse to wear more diamonds rubs me the wrong way... Kind of judgmental sounding.

I have two bands because I like the symmetrical look and I think the ring looks better with 2 instead of the one. H actually bought all 3 bands at the same time because he thought it looked better that way to. It's just personal preference!

Yeah I'm gonna have to agree with it being personal preference. I do love the double band look, but I didn't want to do 2 bands at once so that we could use the money for the extra ring on something else for the wedding Smiley smile

Might add a matching second band at a later anniversary, or just skip it altogether.

Definitely not just for your anniversary. I'm getting a double band crafted for my e-ring because I like things to be symmetrical.

I think it's just a personal preference. There's nothing wrong with wearing double bands right away if that's what you want. Sometimes they're flashy, sometimes they're not...just like pretty much all other kinds of jewelry.

I have two bands because FH bought a second when he got my set. He wanted me to have the second. It's not because of wanting to wear more diamonds. It's because he wanted me to feel special.

I think it's a personal preference. Either you like it doubled, you don't or you want it for a special occasion.

I vote do what makes you and FH happiest!

@Shelby it IS an excuse to wear diamonds! haha. There is only one wedding band, so the other is just for decoration.

@Shelby I'm okay with that sounding judgemental because a spade is a spade. It's a wedding band - singular. The other is for show. You can argue you like the symmetry and you think it looks better, but even the term "enhancer" certainly sounds like the initial diamond(s) you were given weren't good enough so you needed more sparkle on your hand.

Marriage is so much more than buying diamonds, but to me, it will an honor to get that second band after years of the hard work that marriage requires.

Totally agree with you @Shelby and @Futurerand. Im very happy and excited to be getting my double band! FH picked it before I even saw it so I guess he wanted me to feel special.

@MrsSkiToBe I'm not sure if you read my whole comment but I didn't ask for two bands, that's how it was given to me so I definitely did not say anything about it not being good enough because anything I would have gotten would have been perfect.

I understand why people want to wait to "earn" their second ring but I don't think it's necessary to tell someone that it's showy and frivolous if they have a different style than you. There's no reason to try and make someone else feel bad for doing something differently than you. Who does it hurt if someone has two bands? I also think it's weird to be so opinionated about it. Seems like there might be some resentment or jealousy there.

I guess we are going to have to agree to disagree on this one.
