Appropriate co-worker wedding gift?

MrsBest2B, on April 16, 2015 at 12:24 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

FH and I (along with our whole office) were invited to a co-worker's wedding and cannot attend. What is an appropriate gift? Something from her registry? A gift card to one of her registry stores? Money? How much is an appropriate amount to spend?

If it were a close friend, I'd probably send a nice check with my decline, but in this case, I feel like maybe just a gift card to BBB where she's registered will suffice. Is $25-$30 too little?

Is there anything on her registry you can afford? Really, any of the gifts you mentioned are totally appropriate. Spend what you feel comfortable with. There is no "magic number."

How close are you to the co-worker? There's no wrong answer, whatever your comfortable with is appropriate, based on your relationship with the couple. A $25 gift card to BBB sounds fine to me.

If you were attending I'd say go with a gift around $40-$50, but since you're not attending (and costing her more $ per plate) you could go with a $25-$35 registry item or a giftcard to one of her registry places.

Not really close to her. Our office is small, there's only about 18-20 of us so it's a tight group. I like her, just not buddy-buddy with her. I saw a pitcher that was $15 which I thought was low and everything else was $50 which to me, is a little high--but I'd do it if I have to. I was thinking $25-$30 gift card is a nice happy medium, but I wasn't sure if that was appropriate

Yeah $25-$30 is fine. I would do a gift versus cash.

I would do a $25 gift card and call it a day.

I would buy something from her registry for around $30. I agree with Kmess, you can spend a little less since she isn't paying for a plate for you.
