Anyone not using a dj for their wedding?

Emily, on April 8, 2020 at 4:01 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 13

My FH and I are thinking about diy'ing our music. SImply because we can't afford a DJ. I already have a list of music for both the ceremony and the reception and I have it all put together in a specific layout but how exactly can I get to play the music for it to be loud enough for everyone to hear? My ceremony will be held under a pavillion outdoors and reception will be indoors in a Union Hall. What service would you use to get the playlist together? TIA!

You can rent speakers. Check your local listing.

I made a list of instrumental music for my ceremony, and romantic songs for the night. We are doing honeymoon right after the wedding. And we already have Harman Kardon speaker which can be so loud in our house, and the sound is very clean. We will take our speaker, because we are doing a beach destination wedding, just us and our kids (3 adults and 1 bonus kid). Our adult daughter will be in charge of the music.

I'll def look into Spotify, thanks! I think our venue might actually already have speakers set up inside so I'll have to check into that and maybe just rent one for the ceremony. Did anyone have someone that controlled the music and did any announcing?

This makes me feel so much better about doing a playlist! Honestly of all the weddings I've been to, only one has really made the reception better. The rest were either buddies with someone or just there for the cash.

We’re using a large Bluetooth speaker and a playlist I put together on Spotify streaming from an extra phone we found.

We're using spotify also. Our venue has a sound system, but as PP said you can rent speakers if needed.

Love seeing all the other people who are using Spotify/no DJ as well! We also cannot afford the extra cost, and are having a small gathering of around 50 people, which very few are dancers and me and FH are not at all! Thankfully, our venue has speakers so we just need to bring a phone/laptop to play the music. I am going to have my little sister be in charge of the DJ'ing I think! And the MOH/groomsmen do the announcing of dances/cake cutting, etc. Hoping it goes as planned!

I’m planning to borrow a portable speaker and likely use an old iPhone or a laptop for playing the music. I’ve asked a friend to act as Emcee (or in the case of my A Knight’s Tale vibe, he’s going to be Chaucer).

We have not decided yet but I know I think I would appoint a friend who knows about the playlist just in case of technical issues.

Fiance and I have decided that if the 10 people and under mandate for gatherings is continued through July that we will be having just our parents, siblings, officiant and photographer, so we are creating a backup plan for music. Luckily my fiance has done a lot of work producing music so he will be editing our procession music and first dances music, but so he isn't working at his own wedding, the rest will be spotify playlists we create before the ceremony! (Creating a specific "cocktail hour" "dinner" and "dance" playlists. I also agree with the commenter who said to make sure to download the playlists thru the app in case wifi cuts out or anything!)

I cannot personally speak on the DJ issue, but thank you for presenting the question. I never considered not using a DJ and it's pretty impressive how many people have moved forward with playlists instead of DJ's. This is very important information to keep in mind. Thank you again.
