Anyone get crap for the size of their engagement ring?

FutureMrsAF, on February 8, 2017 at 3:33 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 155

My FH proposed in Paris during a trip in January, and he had planned a custom ring, but unfortunately it would not have been ready by the time we left for trip. So in the meantime he got a small .10 carat ring just because he didn't want to NOT propose, and since we've been back we've been planning my upgrade (I still wanted to go small! Haha, he put a deposit a .5 carat and I ended up falling in love with another .10 carat with a halo, I think it's .33 tcw so we are going with that instead, I have 3.5 size fingers so I don't need a huge rock)

I've been getting flack for it anytime anyone sees my ring! "Oh well atleast he's getting you a different one" or "that's... cute" or even just "oh...." it's hurtful and super rude. Now FH is feeling bad because he didn't have enough time to get the larger one and feels like people think he doesn't value me enough to get a bigger one.

Any other brides with dainty rings get not so nice feedback? Just venting. Ugh.

My biggest issue is that it's not their business, but of course everyone wants to see it! Even though I knew my current ring wasn't going to be long term, I still loved it as soon as I saw it and I hate other women making me feel like it's not good enough Smiley sad

My original ring! I am absolutely in love with it. It's dainty but I'm not huge on jewelry so it's exactly what I wanted.

If anyone were to say something to me about it, I would've told them to shove it where the sun don't shine. It's not about the ring. It's about the fact that I'm getting to spend the rest of my life with my best friend.

Don't listen to them. If you love it that's all that matters. I prefer smaller rings than bigger ones. I don't like diamonds period. So I get crap talked to me about not having a rock on my finger.. Ugh my FH knows what I like, that's why I got this one. I hear yuh. It's annoying.

No one can make you feel like it's not good enough without your permission. Do you predicate showing them your ring with "I'm getting a different one" or "this isn't the real ring" or something like that? Who really cares what people think?

Don't let anyone make you feel that way. They don't pay rent to live in your head!

Mine is not so dainty; it's nothing I would have picked but I love it.

Vent away, people have something to say no matter what Smiley smile

Well, that's super obnoxious. I would be super hurtful and rude back. But I'm kind of a bitch like that.

I got a few "cute" responses. That word rubbed me the wrong way. And my ring isn't even what I would ever consider small (1ct tw). Anything bigger would have felt gaudy on me.

But everyone has their own opinions. I freaking love my ring, so it wasn't too bothersome, just annoying sometimes, because I would never tell someone their ring was "cute."

Edited to add a photo of the "cute" ring.

I'd say something smart ass back- I have no time for that type of shit.

It could be a rubber washer and still be valuable and meaningful to you.

I ADORE my ring. Its so perfect for me. Very my style in every way. I got several "oh, its.... Cute" responses and had to fight and urge to throttle people. Its rude. Frankly, everyone who is closest to me loves it and remarked on how well it suits me. So I pretty much write off the other opinions as being from way night maintenance women and dry to let it go.

I don't get much for size, but I've gotten some of those "looks" for having amethyst for my stone (or my favorite Midwestern-ism: "it's unique" in a strained tone). I picked it out though, I love it. They don't need to worry about it, and I don't worry about them.

People have a lot of nerve..I think all sizes are lovely, and as long as you are happy with it, that's all that matters. People who say disrespectful things like that lack class.

It's rude, are these strangers or friends? Either way, it's messed up. I love delicate, small rings!

Similar to MMB and FiddlinBritt, my stone is like 0.6 ct and people always tell me how small it looks! I've gotten so many "Oh it's that big? It doesn't look it!" in *that* tone that I stopped showing people because it made me feel really shitty. Y'alls rings are gorgeous, btw! @Elysia that setting is so unique, I really love it! Is it a tension setting?

Mine is a .25 carat and I absolutely love it. I've had it proudly on my finger for over 3 years.

@elk, no I never mentioned the upgrade part until after they made their comments, and I realized I felt terrible for having to say that. For justifying my ring. It's like.. um, lady I got engaged in PARIS, haha. I think that's pretty awesome in itself. He could have proposed with a ring pop and I would have loved it. I would have eaten it but also loved it Smiley smile

@fiddlinbritt so true. 99% of people who've said anything aren't engaged or married, I hate to sound that catty but I'd love to turn around and be like "well atleast I have an engagement ring". Sounds so high school but it infuriates me.

I have the opposite problem. We got my ring on eBay. It's an antique, which is exactly what I wanted, and as a bonus that meant it was probably 70-90% cheaper than a brand new ring in a jewelry store. I fell in love with its unique style--I've looked at many thousands of rings and never seen a single other one like it--and I didn't particularly care one way or another that it was 1.7 carats. It was within our economical price range so we went for it. Since then, I've gotten a few snippy comments about being materialistic and status-obsessed. I just inwardly roll my eyes. You can't please everyone no matter what.

Size 3.5 here! I'll tell you that I have diamond accents on the side, and they rub the inside of my fingers. Most rings just don't size down that small very well. I'm sure your ring is fabulous and it's perfect for you!

Also, just remember that a lot of them must be in debt over rings and you guys are not!!
