Anyone get alterations done at David's Bridal???

emandjess, on April 7, 2010 at 6:48 PM Posted in Planning 0 20

Ok, so I bought my wedding dress back in August and my wedding is this July. When I bought the dress I got a size 8 and it fit perfectly. I've been dieting a little and trying to lose the last 8 pounds because I want to look perfect and good for my honeymoon (since we're going to Hawaii and I'll be in a bikini 24/7 haha). So anyways, I tried on my dress about 3 weeks ago and it wasn't as tight as before. It was still fitted well in the waist but the top was a tad bit loose. I'm worried that if I lose more weight, I will need to get it taken in. I got my dress at David's Bridal and I heard they are RIDICULOUSLY expensive for alterations. Anyone have to get a DB dress taken in? How much did it cost to just be taken in? I contacted a seamstress who said I could bring it in anytime at least 2 weeks before the wedding and she would charge $60 to take it in. Help??

Personally, I've had an extremely awful time with them and wouldn't recommend them to anyone. Also, I've heard a lot of horror stories about them taking forever and going beyond the date promised. I would seriously consider going to a local seamstress or a small shop instead.

Go elsewhere! If you can even get in, it will be very expensive, and then they will charge you to steam/ press it on top of that! $60 is perfect!

I really think it depends on the store....

You know how DB has a no refunds/exchanges policy? Well I had my dress exchanged 4 times and had a "first fitting" 3 times for 3 of those 4 dresses! Everyone was really nice about it..... even though I am sure I was annoying the crap out of them. Also, my dress has 6 layers of fabric but it only cost $120 to hem, which is nothing for all that labor. It also only cost $55 for the bustle, which had 10 buttons. I would maybe call your store and ask to speak with a manager, tell them about your situation, and ask if it would be possible if you could try on/exchange your dress for another size. Couldn't hurt to ask. Also-- if you buy your dress there they should steam, clean, and do a bead check for free!

I will say that it will probably cost more than $60 to have it taken in, but it depends on the complexity of the dress I guess. Hope this helps and good luck!

Go anywhere but DB!!!! They are rip offs. The 60 someone else quoted will probably be about average for what you will need done. Go with that one. Smiley smile And congrats on having the dress needing to be taken in.

I always seem to end up paying through the nose at DB when it comes to alterations. I have to say, $60 is about right for having it taken in there. However, If it's just the bust where your dress is loose, you can just have them add cups or wear a bra.

Maybe I am lucky, but I had a good experience at David's. I had two layers of crinoline taken out of my dress, bra cups put in and a bustle made and it was only around $55-60. Irma (I think that is her name) was awesome at the Lombard, IL store. I know I have heard horror stories from others, but wanted to give them some credit! : )

I actually like DB. Over the past couple of years i have purchased a total of three wedding gowns there. A couple of yrs ago i gave my girls their birthday party. Sweet 16 & Elegant 18 and they had their alterations done there. Something like $75.00 per dress.

I have no problems at all with DB. I'm going Mon for my last fitting (fingers crossed)... only had 1 before it. Luckily my Mom paid for all alterations. With that said, I only had it hemmed and a bustle which needed 11 snaps... and I know it was UNDER $150.

I've had nothing but good things to say about the DB in York, PA. Now granted when I went in for my fitting (1st wk March), it was crazy busy. They need a store 3X the size.

I fortunately have not had a problem with Davids (yet?) I think it's hit or miss per store maybe? I hope, for their sake, that they don't do anything to anger me when I go for my first fitting next month because I can be really nasty when need be! lol

Maybe go and see what they say and get a feel for their attitude and customer service?

Emandjess, I bought my dress at DB, and I had the same situation as you, the dress fit perfect (its on my profile)hehe. The only thing I wanted was to hem it. I also lost some weight, but it just made the dress fit better, nothing is too big or too loose. I think it costed me $120. But I took it there becuz I figured they knew how to do my dress since they sell it often. Plus I havnt had a problem with my DB in south Fla. I know it was just a hem, but I didnt know if I was going to need any thing else done to it. Plus the steam and press is free the first time. Good luck sweetie.

I bought my dress at DB..it was during the 99 sale. So for a 99 dollar dress..I ended up paying 107.14 so far in alterations because my seamstress wouldn't answer my calls and DB was pressuring me to go in (stupid me I know) and they haven't even added in the price of the bustle which they said for 5 buttons it was 67 dollars. I was not pleased with the amount they charge. I only had to have them take in the bust a little bit add the bra (which wasn't necessary but somehow when she touched my dress my bra showed) and then take in the halter neck. 107. Bit much. I'd go local if I were you.

My alterations for my dress cost more than my dress.. I've already paid for my alterations but she hasn't started altering it yet I have found someone else that would charge way less than that.. will they not refund your money on alterations if u don't want them?

It appears that Davids Bridal charges different from every store. Your experience will also vary. It will be hit or miss. An at home seamstress may or may not be cheaper as well. It depends on their experience level and the quality of work may suffer with the cheaper price. Not every at home seamstress will know how to work on wedding dresses. If lace has to be lifted to take in a seam or beading has to be replaced by hand it could add hours to the alteration time. And on another note...If someone bought a dress for $99.00 and needed a hem, the bodice taken in, and a bustle....another person bought a the exact same style of dress at full price and needed the same alterations....It would cost the same price for alterations. It takes just as long to sew on a sale priced dress as a full priced dress. So yes your alterations may cost more than the dress, especially if you bought that sale priced dress a size or two too big or too small.

Alyssa B, did you ever find out if they would change your alteration order? I'm in the same boat. I was shocked and thought my alteration costs were the average price. My bushel is going to cost me $210 there! Did they let you out of your alterations??
