Anyone else have non-gold or better metal allergies?

Lirana, on April 11, 2013 at 3:13 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 30

So, I'm allergic to most metals that aren't of a certain purity. Even 10k gold can sometimes irritate me. 14k gold or better will not. I can't wear silver. I can't wear gold plated silver either. :-/ I get really jealous when I see everyone posting their beautiful wedding jewelry that I'll never be able to wear. :-P If I want something similar, I will be paying 5-10x the price. I'll probably wear a small pearl pendant on a gold chain that I already own.

Anyone else have metal allergies?

I can wear silver, and better quality gold, but not gold that has any nickle in the mix. I break out like crazy! My skin turns red and burns!!!!

Depending on where the offending piece of jewelry is, my reactions are slightly different. I get the red/burns everywhere. Neck, ears, & wrist will develop a rash. If I put on a ring though... i get blisters! Yay!!!

Lirana, have you been tested for palladium allergy? It is very similar to platinum, but much less expensive and very hypo-allergenic.

I have a nickel allergy as well. I even have to be careful with eyeglasses and headbands! For a while, I was so allergic, the buttons on my jeans were making me break out in hives.

I've learned that if I buy things that are "hypo-allergenic", "nickel free", "stainless steel", or good gold and silver, then I'm fine. FH got my 14K white gold for my promise ring and engagement ring, and I'm fine with those. I've also been fine so far with sterling silver.

It's an awful allergy! When I was first allergic, there was nothing out there to avoid it, but it seems it's much more common now. Almost everywhere I go now has nickel-free jewelry.

My daughter is allergic to everything but real gold.

Clear nail polish is your friend! The snaps on her jeans, costume jewelry and hair ties all get a coat of clear nail polish.

    This works like a charm!

Barbara, I've never actually been tested. I test stuff by putting it on! Smiley tongue I got an allergic reaction holding a pen this past weekend... that was fun. I've learned through experience that I can do titanium. I don't think I've tried palladium.

Trena, I learned the hard way with glasses! My first pair I kept thinking it was odd that I kept breaking out on my temples. Then I realized it was my glasses, and that I wasn't breaking out, it was a rash! Unfortunately, hypo-allergenic isn't good enough for me. Stainless steel, surgical steel, etc. still give me reactions.

I get the same! I'm allergic to nickel and my e-ring is 10K White gold. I had no idea there was nickel in white gold. I don't usually wear jewelry though. My jeweler suggested dipping in rhodium but I still get the red burns and itchy blisters. Next step is to plate the inside with yellow gold. Apparently that will work. I even have to buy nickel free belts to avoid irritation.

Serenity, I've tried clear nailpolish on earrings before. It either doesn't work for me or maybe I didn't coat it good enough. Needless to say, I really don't want to risk trying it again. I'm a scratcher. I can't help it. Scratching always makes it worse.

Janessa, my ring is 14k white gold (dipped in rhodium). I have no problems with it. Are you sure it's not the 10k gold giving you the issue? 10k gold I'm okay with on my neck sometimes, but never my fingers.

Testing stuff by putting it on is enough evidence! But definitely be careful!

Titanium is beautiful and so versatile-- if you know it is safe for you, I would go with that!

I don't have allergies, but I do have platinum bands. If you decide to go that route, look into smaller, independent jewelers. My rings were not much more expensive than comparable white gold.

I am allergic to everything under the sun...but oddly enough not metals. FH was sweet to buy me a platinum ring thinking it would be better for my skin lol...little did he know sterling silver would have been just fine!

Nolacrazygirl, I think ears are extra sensitive because we've already gone and poked holes in them where there shouldn't be any. Smiley tongue

Vicki, that really stinks! I hope they weren't too expensive.

Barbara, I should clarify that I wasn't allergic to my titanium eyeglasses I had several years ago. I was very happy when plastic eyeglass frames came back in style though!

Do any of you girls with metal allergies have wedding jewelry picked out yet?

I'm very allergic to metals - I can't even wear 18k gold - I can however wear platinum. I warned FH that I was just an expensive girl Smiley smile

I will be wearing a cord necklace with my wedding dress that has a slide to lengthen and tighten the necklace in back and a beautiful piece of green quartz hanging in front. No metal at all but still a stunning necklace. There are tons of alternative jewelry out there that has no metal you just have to look around!

I am allergic to anything that is not high grade gold. Which sucks for DH as he has tried to buy me jewellery and I can't wear it. He got me a lovely watch that I can wear for a day, then get a rash and then have to stop wearing it for a few days. I only have a handful of earrings that I can wear. Luckily my aunt had some very high end jewellery that I was able to borrow for the wedding. I think I inherited my allergy from my grandmother (mom's mom). She also couldn't wear a lot of jewellery, had to pin a watch to her sweater.

I have reactions to nickel as well we didn't even think of it when we were purchasing my engagement ring so now we are upgrading it to a platinum setting. it has taken a while because we bought the ring in Edmonton and live in Vancouver I have tried the rhodium dipping and nail polish trick it didn't work for me.
