Anyone else have non-gold or better metal allergies?

So, I'm allergic to most metals that aren't of a certain purity. Even 10k gold can sometimes irritate me. 14k gold or better will not. I can't wear silver. I can't wear gold plated silver either. :-/ I get really jealous when I see everyone posting their beautiful wedding jewelry that I'll never be...

I'll probably wear a small pearl pendant on a gold chain that I already own.

Anyone else have metal allergies?

I am exactly like you Lirana. I can only wear 14k and higher. Gold-plated, silver, hyopallergenic, surgical steel, etc. all cause a huge reaction to my skin. It looks almost like a poison ivy rash. I can't even wear a watch because the back of the watch face causes the same reaction.

When I had my belly button pierced, I had to get a 14K gold ring since the surgical steel one never let my skin heal. The guy who did the piercing told me surgical steel is fine since it is what's used in surgeries, but I knew it wouldn't work for me. I had it in for a year and then finally switched it out. It's been perfect ever since.

Glue affects me the same way. All kinds of glue including nail glue, Elmer's, glue on band-aids, etc.

The acid in my skin will eat right through gold plating. A locket that was against my chest -- the gold color totally disappeared from the back of it. Gold-filled rings leave a black ring around my finger.

DH gave me an antique gold-filled chain. I told him I'd just ruin it. So he sold it instead and got me an antique solid gold chain that I can wear.

I can wear sterling and platinum and my glasses are titanium-framed.

    But nothing silver-plated or gold-filled.

My daughter does. She has to wear sterling silver or 14K gold, or niobium. Poor kid can't shop at Claire's, everything there makes her ears crack and bleed. If she gets things there, it has be on french hooks - at least then I can change them out for sterling silver hooks for her!

I used to only be able to wear gold and surgical steel in ears but now i can't even wear that..I got these gorgeous diamond earings that i can't wear because i want to rip my ears off 5 minutes after they are in Smiley sad. I can wear gold everywhere else but not my ears anymore. All of those "hypoallergenic" earings don't work either, sterling silver takes a bit longer to cause a reaction but causes one eventually. I'm thinking about putting the diamonds in platinum but it's expensive and i'm not 100% that will work either. I have excema as well so my skin pretty much hates me lol

Stephanie, I have the same adhesive issues! When I had my gall bladder removed a few years ago, the surgical tape holding my gauze made me sooo itchy. My scratching ended up spreading the rash all over my entire stomach.

Nancy, yikes! I had a friend in high school who could only wear silver. Yours is the first I've heard of with issues like that, though.

Laura, I had pretty bad eczema as a kid. The fungal kind, not the just-dry-skin kind. I ended up being allergic to the cream that was initially prescribed for me. As far as the earrings, may you can find an inexpensive platinum pair on eBay or something to do a test run? Or a jewelry store with a 30-day money back policy? If those work, then get a new setting.

Yes!! Discovered as a teen, when I started getting jewelry. Anything that was NOT solid 14k or more, literary “ate” my skin.
Now I’m discovering that a hip replacement maybe the root of an issue with skin problem on my foot the same leg. They have researched, biopsied the skin tissue and came up with all kinds of results, which made no sense and medical creams didn’t help. It started with strange rashes, blisters and peeling started on my foot. It couldn’t be pin pointed on the root of the problem, and multiple creams and meds didn’t help. Recently, I realized it’s only on the foot and leg of the hip replacement years ago, and found an article as such. So today I go to my Hip doctor to discuss the problem. Hopefully we can find the root of the issue and rectify the problems. Wish me luck!!

Yes! Discovered at 12 yrs (now 63) can only wear SOLID 14kt gold (or more). I’m now experiencing problems with my hip, and rashes on same foot & leg, misc others areas and fogginess, concentration, tiredness, & thyroid-weight issues. had replaced years ago. I made an appt to have my hip checked before researching and realizing this last nite! Wish me luck!
