Anyone chopping their train off?

Rachel Kay, on September 24, 2014 at 10:32 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 33

Just curious. My seamstress offered this as an option during my first fitting, and since my second is this Saturday, figured I should possibly find some sort of answer.

The two main reasons I'm considering it are:

1) it is an outdoor wedding, in a National Forest which means pinestraw, pinecones, sweetgum balls, and there is lichen EVERYWHERE, plus your usual suspects small twigs, leafs etc.

2) I hate the hassle of a bustle. If there were no train, no one would have to be trained on how to do it.

Added plus? It will save me around $75 in alterations since I'll need a multiple point bustle.

Thoughts? Will I miss it if it is gone?

Do you have a pic of your dress? maybe make the train detachable?

I purchased a vintage gown with a train. We had an afternoon garden wedding. I had the train chopped and the dress shortened to tea length. Worked great for me!

This is before any alterations. It does "poof" out more after being fitted to me. It is a trumpet style dress.

I'm not, but my friend did when she got married. It was kinda funny, because the seamstress just couldn't imagine that a bride wouldn't want a train, and just kept shortening it rather than completely taking it off. My friend finally convinced her to lop it all off, and she never missed it. She was thrilled to not have the hassle.

ETA- Your dress is very pretty, but I think with the shape, it might look a little evening gown-ish without a train. Maybe leave a very small sweep train that wouldn't be so cumbersome?

I considered having my train removed for the sake of not having a bustle. My sister/MOH told me I better not. She likes the dress as it is and making it easier for her and the bridesmaids is not a good enough reason to remove the train.

That being said your situation is very different. In your situation I would probably have the train removed. Maybe you can find a different way to use at least the lace from the train. Please let us know what you decide to do.

Me! My dress is all tulle and glitter netting, so bustling it, in my opinion, will look terrible. So, I've decided to cut the train off so I can have a longer veil. It'll save me the hassle of worrying if the bustle is going to bust or it getting all ripped up. I'll save the material from the train and have it made into a little tutu for a daughter, if I ever have one Smiley smile

No train for this girl either. I've seen too many people struggle with the bustle or had it looped around their wrist all night and that looked annoying.

I'm having an outdoor wedding as well so I'll be chopping any sort of train. I hate bustling dresses.

I am seriously considering it. My mom wants me to keep it, and I am changing dresses for the dancing part of my reception. I don't want a bustle, but I also don't want to have to hold the end up during the cocktail hour/dinner

I did it! My seamstress looked at me like I had two heads but I love my dress so much more now. Its an A line tulle skirt so the bustle looked HORRIBLE. And it weighs SO much less.

Nope. I chose my dress because of the train. But, if it's not what you want, then definitely chop it off!

Amanda, your dress is beautiful! Is that from the Disney Princess series? It looks familiar!

Like you I wanted to cut off the train of whatever dress I got. I didn't want to have to worry about it (even though my wedding was inside). So I can understand where you are coming from. But then when I picked out the dress it had such lovely decoration on the back and on the train and it looked so pretty bustled, so I ended up changing my mind and I kept the train.

But if you want to cut it off and there's nothing on the bottom or the train that you want to keep, then go for it!

I purchased my dress without a train because I am getting married on the beach and I hate bustles. I say chop it off!

My niece wants me to chop her train off. I haven't seen the dress in person yet to know if that's a good idea or not, or how it would look if it was bustled (it's got a very full tulle skirt, so I imagine any kind of bustle would look bulky). She's coming for her fitting in a couple weeks, and I'm very curious to see how this plays out in the end.

    Noooooooooo!!!!!! don't do it!!!!!!!

totally just me tho. I absolutely LOVE trains. IMO, they are part of what make a wedding dress special. I have a gigantic one (and an outside wedding) and can't imagine having my dress without it. I think your dress is stunning with the train, but obviously you should do what makes you the most comfortable.

I don't know. I asked the staff at David's Bridal about removing it and they said they could not, but I have not had my 1st appointment with my new seamstress yet, and if she says she can, then I am. It's short, but I would really rather not have it.

I'm debating it. Like you, my wedding is outside and I don't want it dragging and getting dirty. So I will either chop it or have it bustled the whole time and I haven't seen a bustle I'm partial to. The train doesn't have much detail on it so I'm not super worried.
