Any teachers get married during the school year?

Anna, on August 26, 2016 at 6:37 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 38

I teach elementary school and I'm getting married in April (during our spring break). I'm guessing I will still go by Ms. Maiden Name for the rest of the school year since it'll only be for 2 months or so. But curious if anyone else had their students start calling them their new Mrs. Lastname during the school year?

Both my current last name and FH's last name start with the same letter and the both only have 4 letters (actually, only 1 letter difference! Kinda funny)-- so it won't be a huge change anyway!

A friend of mine went from maiden to married when she got married in November. She said everyone called her a mix of both for the rest of the year. Might as well just go by your maiden name all year.

I had a teacher who got married on our fall break. She got a mix of both for the rest of the year. You would have thought her name was "Ms. ____-I-Mean-Mrs____" lol. And this was high school, so you would have thought we'd be better at it. At the elementary level you might as well go by your maiden name.

A lot of my teacher friends start with their married name at the start of the year or either wait until the end to change (but we teach younger kids). If you do change just don't worry about it if they forget sometimes. You could make it a game like guessing your new name if they are younger!

Not a teacher but an SRO... Im also getting married in April and am going to continue being Deputy R until the next school year. Did the same with my last name change when I got divorced near the beginning of the year. Its easier to just keep the name the full year than to explain to everyone

I used to work at a school and one of the fourth grade teachers got married in the middle of the school year. The kids had no problem calling her by her new last name, and she said that it made her really happy to have all the kids call her by her new name.

My nephew's kindergarten teacher got married in the middle of his school year - and they had a big going away party for her the Thursday before her wedding weekend, and when she came back she was Mrs. Married Name.

The kids thought it was great - her husband even came in so they could meet him after they got married. My nephew is now in 3rd grade and still talks about it whenever we talk about my wedding.

I'm a teacher getting married in April too. I'm definitely keeping my maiden name the rest of the year. I'm actually not even going to change it at the school at all. So it will always stay. Mrs. Oldlastname

My son's teacher last year got married over the Labor Day weekend and she just started the kids off by calling her by her new last name so it was no confusion for the kids.

I am also a teacher getting married in April during spring break this year! My plan is to keep my maiden name since I am fairly certain the kids will have a hard time switching at that point... I already get called 'mom' enough as it is, haha. I plan to switch for next school year with a new crew of students.

I am not a teacher, but I work with kids with autism and have been hinting at it for a long time now. All my kids (besides maybe two) know I'm getting married and I keep joking how I am, "becoming a whole new person" haha but I will still my Katie since they don't call me by my last name.

I teach technology in elementary. FH teaches PE in high school & coaches. We are getting married the week before fall break. Fall break is our honeymoon. I have started a countdown in my class that says X days til Mrs Patterson to get kids used to my new name. With the littles we count the number of days left (by 1s, 5s, 10s, etc) with bigger kids we divide days left by 7 to see how many weeks are left before the if day. The kids absolutely love it & there will be very few kids that aren't going to be acquainted with my new name when the time comes.

ETA: some actually call me "future Mrs Patterson" now instead of my actual name.

I'm getting married during spring break as well! However, I'm going to have them continue to call me by my maiden name. I think it'll be a little difficult for them to transition like that, so late in the year.

I'm going to get it change to my married last name but since my pre-k kids doesn't talk it won't be a problem...and my married last name is easier to pronounce than my last name now...so other staff members shouldn't have a problem

I'm getting married in October and I'm graduating in April, and I'm hoping to get a teaching job for the **** school year. If I do, I'll probably have the kids go by my new name since it'd be changing two months in anyway. Plus I think Mrs. Myers is such a teachery name haha

I'm getting married in April too but I'm hypehnating the last names so I'll still go by Ms. Mac. I've had other friends get married during the school year and they keep their maiden name on the email and documents for the rest of the year but tell the kids they can start calling her by her new last name.

I'm a teacher getting married July 15th but our school year starts I believe August 9th and I'm not sure if the district will put my name change paperwork through before schedules get handed out at open house and on the first day. Even though I will be Mrs. C some kids might still call me Ms. W because it's what's on their schedules. I hope I can break that habit quick! (FH works at the same school and we teach some of the same kids so maybe that will help) Smiley smile

High school teacher here. I've been married, divorced, and now getting married again. It doesn't matter when you change it. You are going to have kids (and adults) calling you a mixture of both for the next couple years lol. I literally had a student come up to me today and call me by my former married name, and I have been divorced for 2 years now... One of the hazards of people knowing you almost exclusively by your last name. I will get married with like 2 weeks left in school so I am staying with maiden name until next year, but am already prepping them for the new name.
