Alright, ladies. Let's talk boobs....I mean BRAS!

Holly, on June 20, 2012 at 5:45 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 40

Alright. This is one thing that I am having a terrible time with! My dress is strapless so I have to get a strapless bra. I hate strapless bras because they never stay up for me! But, I'm willing to do it, if I can find one that will stay up! But, I also have the problem of being a 40B! I want a bra that is strapless and pushes the girls up! Anyone else having the same problems I am? What bra/ brand are you/ did you wear! This girl needs help!

If strapless bras never stay up for you, you might want to rethink your bra size. Most women wear bras that are the wrong size. The common error is that the band size is too big, and the cup size is too small. Since it is the band that keeps it in place and provides the support, a too large band size causes all sorts of issues. So if you've been wearing a 40B, check out a 38C or even a 36D and see if it works better. Since bras stretch in use, you want one that is actually a bit uncomfortably tight, even at the loosest setting, when you first try it on. It will quickly stretch to a size that is comfortable, but that stays put in use and is far more supportive.

That being said, I had very good luck with the Dominique style 8950 Longline Strapless Smooth Torsolette Wedding Bra. And NotFroofy, who has more trouble with bras generally than I do, found a Le Mystere Bridal Seduction Bustier Bra 2355 both comfortable and supportive.

Do you really have to have a strapless bra? I wear a 32F and my dress was boned/really supportive so it pushed the girls up way better than any strapless bra I own (which is saying a lot b/c I love my strapless bra, it's the Satin Spacer by Prima Dona.)

I would ask your seamstress about push-up. They can always sew little cups or pads into the dress, too.

I agree with Kris that you might find it more comfortable to have cups sewn into your dress. But a 40B is a tough size to find. I usually end up with a 36C instead of the 38B that I am.

I had this problem so I decided not to wear a bra at all. *Gasp* lol My grandmother was quite beside herself but I had a tight bodice on my dress and a corsette back so I just had my cousin tie it so tight that I couldn't breath. It kept the girls in fairly well...There are a few pictures of me sitting that I had to take out of circulation. In hindsight, I should have bought some duct tape...I've never actually found a strapless bra that works for me. Maybe you could go to a store and be sized for one? I know Victoria's Secret does that, not sure about where else. Good luck!

My "bra" is like a corset type thingy, so it stays up, sucks in my lady curves and pushes my girls up. It's kind of a miracle. I'm a 40B too!!!

OMG Victoria's Secret is the worst at bra measurement. The last time I walked in there, the chick tried to convince me I was a 36D. Um, no. I tried it on just to show the consultant that she was full of crap and the weight of my boobs actually broke the bra b/c the size was so wrong, all the pressure was on the straps. That's how people end up with back pain and divets in their shoulders, too.

2D is right, the band is really where you get the support. I wear my strapless bra all the time and it doesn't fall down even when we go out dancing and such, and my girls are definitely not as perky as they used to be either. Smiley smile

I prefer getting sized at Nordtrom's way more the Victoria's Secret! And Nordstrom has a wide selection of bras that are the same price and cheaper than the VS bras. VS always puts me in bras that are too tight around the chest and too big in the cup.

I'm a 32 DDD, which is a nearly impossible size to find! Luckily I have great structure in my dress, especially since the back is really low and I won't be able to wear a bra with it!

My seamstress is sewing in cups to help the girls stay in place and I think once it fits me (is taken in) it will work. She has assured me this is the way to go!

I never though about getting things sewn into my dress.....that makes me worry more about them falling down! OH DEAR! I was sized at victorias secret and they told me 38C but, in most brands, thats too big and the girls go every which way. Does anyone know how much davids bridal charges to put the sewn in bra in? I have never, ever, had luck with bras.

Davids charges 20 for the cup. Not sure about the work of putting it in.

Have you had a fitting yet? And does your dress have boning or structure around the middle, or is it soft/fluid like a satin or chiffon? If your dress is structured and it's fitted properly around the ribcage, it's not going to fall down no matter what you stuff in the top of it. Smiley smile

I think it's normal to wear different sizes in different brands of bras, I'm the same way for bras, clothing, shoes.... And I think whoever does sizing at Victoria's Secret is smoking crack. Smiley smile I think the bra/no bra thing is just preference so if you're going to be more comfortable with a separate bra, I'd go to Nordstrom or a specialty bra shop like this one to be properly measured:

My first fitting is this Sunday...at david's bridal. I'm kind of nervous about the too....they seem to be money hogs and I don't want to end up overspending for my dress to be taken in an inch and hemmed an inch....but yes, my dress has some structure..guess I'll just have to see what works for me...thanks ladies!

Another thing to think about: long-line bras actually provide the support by resting on your hips, then having boning that goes up to your breasts. So unless you can bend steel, there is no way they are going to "fall down." Have the previous strapless bras you've had trouble with been long-line?

There are lots of horror stories about DB, but there are lots of girls who have had great experiences there for sales and alterations. I would just see what they say, and if it doesn't sound right or makes you uncomfortable, I would tell them you want to compare prices elsewhere before you commit to having them do the work.

I got really stressed 2 months out that my dress wouldn't fit or look right too. Totally normal!!! You'll find a good solution and you're going to look amazing. Don't stress. Smiley smile

I got a strapless bra and my seamstress is sewing the actual bra into my dress, not just cups. I'm not sure what the benefit of doing it that way is versus just having cups sewn in except that after my wedding, I can take the bra out of my dress and wear it again.

Katie, now that sounds like an idea!! It definitely wouldn't fall the way! HAHA! I've only had one strapless bra and it wasn't long lined...but I had to keep pulling it up...it was just horrible...
