Already Too Late for October 2017 Wedding? (Hudson Valley, NY)

Punkin Beer, on March 10, 2016 at 7:05 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

Our wedding date is tentatively scheduled for October 2017 to coincide with the peak fall leaf season. Due to the limited time for leaves, we have 2 to 3 Saturdays tops to get the best colors. It's 1.5 years out but I keep seeing other October 2017 brides saying they have already locked down their venues and vendors. Plus, I've heard that fall in NY can be busier than summer. Are we already too late?! >. <

October is the second most popular wedding month in Virginia (partially because of leaf season in the Blue Ridge/Shenandoah) and fourth nationwide. You need to lock down a venue right away - everything else can wait awhile.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. We are currently trying for non traditional venues in the Hudson Valley in New York.

We're getting married in October 2017 (for the same reason!). Some venues were already booked when we sent inquiries, but we were still able to find a perfect spot for our reception. If you start now, you should be able to book something in time! But you're totally ok to wait on everything else, so no need to stress out completely!

Non traditional as in public parks and other public areas? I would contact the county or a service to see if you need a permit if that's what your looking for!

Also, put your location in the title so other brides in that area could give you advice!

Have you met with anyone from the venues you're interested in booking, yet? Your best bet is to call and ask them what their availability is for fall weddings right now. You'll either find that they have limited availability or that you would have your choice of dates as of right now. But at least you would know if you need to hurry up and book, have some time, or need to consider other venues.

I have to post a quick word of caution if you plan to use federal land. There is an amazing place here in Virginia called Skyline drive - in the mountains, beautiful leaves, overlooks, etc. I had a friend that reserved one of the few wedding "venues" (very rustic, basically a covered shelter type area with cabins nearby) a full 2 years in advance. That was her vision. Then....the federal government had its "shutdown", federal parks/land closed, and her wedding was cancelled (well, postponed). She was broken-hearted. Just something to consider.

I'm in Hudson valley also! I have a few co-workers engaged and getting married next year. Only one has booked a venue, others are in the process of doing so. And yes, according to some vendors, October is now most popular wedding month!

Thanks for the comment about federal land. As a DC area native, I'm very familiar with the chaos that federal shutdowns cause. Even weddings can be hurt by them! At this time however, I wasn't considering a venue on federal property.

Non traditional as in some outdoor area (park or forest) for ceremony and preferably a brewery for the reception.

If you are actively looking for venues now you should be fine....If you're finding that most things are booked up, you may have to reconsider your date but 19 months out you should be able to find something

I don't think your too late but I also think you should narrow down your venue choices soon.

I think it can happen; there are so many beautiful venues there! Bear Mountain is my fave, and there are three very different venues there. But yes, I would nail the venue down soon.

If you can find a venue it's definitely not too late. FH and I got engaged in early December and we are getting married this October. Some of the venues we looked at had most of their October dates booked. But we found a venue we loved and didn't have to wait another year. We did end up pushing our date back a week though because the original date we wanted was booked.

Either 50 or 100 people (still going back and forth on size still). Budget is 10 to 12k.

Were you able to find a place?? I started looking in December and many places were already booked for Fall 2017. We could have found something but decided to go with June based on life/work schedules.
