All my Southern brides! Publix related questions...

Mrs. Batog-Huffman, on October 29, 2015 at 11:25 AM Posted in Planning 0 33

I know most of us in the South know that Publix is pretty much amazing. I am considering various options of cake. I am wondering if used Publix to purchase their wedding cake. I’ve looked into a few designs and I know their cakes are amazing but I want to know if anyone has experience with Publix. Do you have pictures? What was your cost? Did you have it delivered? Do you think it was worth it?

Didn't use Publix for our wedding cake as we got a great deal at a local bakery. But I LOVE publix cakes! We will probably get one from them for the RD. We are also using publix for our sides for the reception dinner.

@Rebecca - From what I've been able to track down and price, they are very reasonable, something close to $2-$3 or less per slice. The lowest I found was $4.00 per slice but with delivery and setup cost, it was about $5.00 per slice. I have always loved Publix for their customer service...well that and pretty much everything else.

@VMDIZZLE - Trust me, I know the sadness, when I lived in New York for 2 years any trip down here I was at Publix within an hour of landing.

@AG2005 - We use Publix for our outings on the boat. We do platters and they're always yummy. One time they mixed up our order giving us two orders of wrap platters instead of a wrap platter and fresh veggie platter. They prepped the fresh veggie platter with exactly what we wanted and even offered the second wrap platter for 1/2 price.

Our venue includes the wedding cake from a local bakery, but if it wasn't included I would have DEFINITELY gone with Publix. Their cakes taste amazing (obv) and I've seen some really cute pictures of wedding cakes they've done on Pinterest. The end result may not be as fancy design-wise as what you'd get from a specialty bakery, but it'll taste great and be very reasonably priced.

I was hoping this thread would be about their subs *sigh*. I do know my coworker's daughter had a publix cake and while I don't know how much it cost them, she did tell me that it was worth it and very good.

Talking about grocery stores...I wish Wegmans was in more locations than central NY.

@Genny - I know all this talk about Publix had me thinking about subs and how I'm thinking I'm gonna make tonight Publix sub Thursday.

@Jennifer - I love their cakes I just want to be sure that the wedding cakes will be the same quality. Of course I'll have to ask the Publix ladies (or gents) these questions. I just know that Walmart does not use the same quality, they use frozen cakes that they thaw and then decorate. From the pictures I've seen Walmart is nowhere near as good when it comes to the decorating of the cakes.

@Elizabeth - I wish Publix wasn't just in the South. I had to wait until my FW's best friend came down for vacation to show her the amazingness that is our subs.

@Lauren R. - All of you talking about how amazing the cakes are and you confirming that a wedding had a cake that was just as amazing, really makes me want to go get the info ASAP.

We did a cake tasting with Publix a few weeks ago. It was very good cake! We got a quote for a 3-tiered (12-inch bottom layer, 9-inch middle, 6-inch top) version of the pictured cake plus a half sheet cake with cream cheese icing, filling, taxes, and delivery for $400. Oh, and we plan on replacing the silver ribbon with royal blue ribbon so it goes with our theme better.

At our cake tasting we had (1) yellow cake with hummingbird filling and buttercream icing, (2) red velvet cake with strawberry filling and cream cheese icing, (3) chocolate cake with pineapple filling and fondant. We loved the hummingbird and strawberry fillings so we're going to do both. Cream cheese icing was an up charge but kicks all other icing's butts.

ETA: Oh yeah, and this feeds approx 140 people. The 6-inch top tier is not included in the numbers because they assume you'll keep it for the 1-year anniversary thing.

Publix is our go-to for birthday cakes (love their carrot cake!). Our caterer provided our wedding cake, but for our 20th anniv. vow renewal, we ordered a sheet cake with the same colors as our wedding.

I LOVE PUBLIX and i miss them so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would totally have publix for my wedding. If its not as dolled up as you like add some flowers or ribbon or bling or even a nice topper should be enough. There was a BAM the other day where the bride did her own bouquet and decorated her cake.

@frugal_gator - You answered my other questions...FW is obsessed with Carrot Cake while I'm partial to Red Velvet. Obviously our favorite part of both is the cream cheese icing. I wasn't sure if they would do that. So awesome. I would ask you to make sure you post a picture of your cake in your BAM but you're after me. I guess if we go with Publix, I'll have to post one for you Smiley winking

We went to a wedding where the cake was catered by publix, and it was AWESOME. White w strawberries in/on it. Bride said she paid like $400, and for the tasting u can call them up and say what flavors you are interested in, and they box it up for you to try at home.

@So.Many.Questions - That is completely awesome! FW works crazy hours while I work a 9-5 job so scheduling appointments is hard. She actually asked if the bakeries could do that for her and only one was willing to do it so far, the rest want us to taste them in store or at their location.

My cousin is a bakery manager at a Publix here in Bradenton. She posts beautiful pictures on a regular basis of various wedding cakes she has done. Their quality is better than a lot of boutique cakes shops. Go for it!

I would have if I liked my cousin better, but since I can't stand her we went with the place suggested by our venue ;-)

Out of curiosity.... Does Publix charge for cake tastings (when you take them home to try)?

Our cake tasting was at the store, didn't take very long, and, even with 5 people, there was so much cake left over that we got to bring home. The cake tasting was free for us, but if you're not able to both go there, one of you can go and taste them, and then bring it home for the other.

@Elisabeth, Wegmans is expanding beyond CNY. I'm also a fan of Wegmans from when I went to school at Syracuse. They now have a few in MA (where I'm from) and are opening one in Brooklyn in 2016 (where I currently live). Brooklyn will be its smallest store, but still excited its opening. Regarding Publix, whenever on FL it's always been a good experience.
