Alcohol or Dry Wedding?

I am debating whether or not to have alcohol at our reception. At first I was planning an evening with an open bar, then an early afternoon with champagne and maybe one signature drink. But the more I think about it, we don't have any super big drinkers in our family, it's at like 2 in the afternoon. And I'm terrified I'll put down a ton of money for bar tending, security, and alcohol that no one will drink. I can think of other things I'd rather spend that money on, but I don't want to seem cheap and I don't think I've ever been to a dry wedding before. Help!

If you do not have super big drinkers why not do a consumption bar? It's a matter of knowing your crowd & hosting them based on that, not what you would prefer. Just my opinion OP.

Also, I agree with @ Katie.

I don't know what kind of host wants to host a party where they make their guests weigh their love of the couple against having a good time.

Many of us only get a limited number of days off per year and even our weekends are packed. I love going out with my DH for dinner, drinks, and dancing. I just remember great nights out and being hosted well. I also remember when a host makes an event barely bearable. I've been to a ton of dry or cash bar weddings. It just turns into "when can we get out of here" and when the cake is cut a majority of the guests get up and head out.

By all means, ignore our comments if you wish, but if you find your reception lacking or guests going missing after an hour, we warned you it could happen.

OG it's not cultural to be a crappy host.. however it's not in every culture that the definition of being a good host implies having alcohol or other things I've read on here.

Again, if you are living in the US it's pretty expected here to have some sort of alcohol. I am simply stating no one can say this is the end all etiquette for every culture.

I'm sure I'll be scolded for saying this, but I have been to plenty of weddings that were dry and still had a great time! Fun does not equal alcohol. If alcohol is something that you don't necessarily care to have, then don't have it, it is your wedding. I personally think that 2PM is a little early to be drinking in the first place! Maybe it is where I am from, but alcohol at weddings isn't a requirement here, even though most of WW would probably disagree!

The open bar opens at my wedding at 3pm and closes down @ 10pm, I guess we will have tons of bananas in the toilet!

You know, now that I read over the insistence some people have...

Why don't we have parties with Ecstasy or magic mushrooms or LSD because they'd be way more fun? Alcohol is the only intoxicating substance that a party must have to be fun? Smiley tongue

Yeah, I like to drink, and in fact I probably drink more than most people. I'd sneak my own booze into a dry wedding because I want a drink. But I sure as hell think people can have fun sober, and that the concept of having fun sober isn't a terrible thing at all.

C'mon, y'all- you really can't have fun and cut loose without a drink? Step away from the Miss Manners book for a minute because I'm broadening the question- you really can't have a good time, would feel like a get together with friends wasn't good if there wasn't any alcohol? Really?

I think that says an awful lot about this culture and our society.

The only dry wedding I have ever been to was when the bride and groom were both in AA and newly recovering alcoholics. I didn't complain about that because I understood their circumstances, but I will tell you, it led to a lot of coolers in the trunk and people spent more time outside in the parking lot. Unless this is the situation, I would say no way to the dry wedding.

How are you comparing alcohol to illegal drugs? You can have a few martinis without trippin ballz.

2PM on a Saturday is too early to start drinking? But have you been to brunch?

I'm sorry but if you didn't want honest answers this is how I suggest you may consider posting in the future:

    Hi WW

I have decided I don't want alcohol at my wedding. We are afraid people will think we are cheap but they should love us enough to just sit there and view us for hours. They will be grateful to merely attend! Support my decision.

*Mods, it is a suggested post. I am by no means telling anyone how to post. Just a tip for the future

@Susan: Nope. I am incapable of having fun unless I have a glass of wine in hand.

Okay Susan, thank you for comparing apples to grenades.

    Is it Wednesday?

When I was in Uni, I hosted dinner parties, with wine and beer. I made sure there was enough food and enough alcohol for everyone. No one ever got "wasted", if they did, I made sure they either had a bed to sleep in or a sober ride home. WTF is the difference for a wedding? It's just a large dinner party.

For one, I can easily go into any corner deli and buy an alcoholic beverage. What I cannot do is buy illegal drugs. I have to call someone else for that ..

    That's comparing apples to oranges

@MrsMPhil I am pretty sure someone said on the last page that a party without alcohol is not entertaining.

That is a pretty big statement to make, hence I posed an extension to that.

Like I said, I like my alcohol as much or more than the next person. But holy crap, the world isn't going to end if someone has a dry party.

In what world does LSD and Estcacy equal alcohol?!?! Those are extremely lethal drugs and do major damage to your brain, even in small doses.

@Kristin, I could have said marijuana edibles, then, and the comparison stands.
