airbrush vs mineral makeup

rachel, on March 22, 2013 at 2:11 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

Girls, which is better airbrush or mineral makeup. I am getting my makeup done by an artist and she uses bare minerals. I wasn't sure which would look better. Anyone have pics?

I've actually heard mineral makeup is bad for photos because of how it reflects light. It's great in person for every day but can give a funny look in photos.

I have heard that mineral makeup is not ideal for photos either but in my profile pic I am wearing Bare minerals makeup which I use every day, so I don't see the difference but it may vary on a paler tone skin.

With that said I will be doing airbrush because I feel I cant go wrong.

I've never heard that. Good to know because I wear mineral makeup normally and was planning on it for the wedding.

Mineral makeup will work just fine! You should ask if your MUA has a firm concept of contouring and highlighting for photoready makeup if you're concerned about looking bad in the photos. Smiley smile

Edited to complete my thought! Ha!

I'm surprised that a makeup artist is using bare minerals. The problem with bare minerals is that it has spf in it, and spf will reflect light in photographs, specifically flash photography, and will cause you to look super washed out.

Moria, I use Pur Minerals every day and in my e-pics. It wasn't bad because our photographer didn't need to use flash. As you can see, I still have plenty of color in my face.

However I learned first hand at a friend's reception how much it reflects light from a flash. Her photographer went around taking photos of all the couples at their tables. When I saw the photo of DH and I when she got her photos back, it was absolutely HORRENDOUS. Seriously, white as a ghost, completely washed out. I looked horrible.

Stay away from mineral makeup for your wedding day, or any makeup with SPF for that matter. Airbrush is wonderful and totally worth it.

If your makeup artist is using bare minerals she is not an experienced makeup artist probably more of a hobbiest. Mineral Makeup photographs really badly in all situations it should never be used for any sort of photoshoot only for causal day to day wear.

Airbrush makeup comes in several formulations which can fit your needs. It can also give light to full coverage.

This is a great post. I use bare minerals on a daily basis and I am getting my make up done by them tomorrow for fun, but it never occurred to me how it would look in photos with a flash! Back to the drawing board...

I had airbrush and I absolutely loved it. It lasted all night and did not wash off. I had it done for TTD and it was flawless even in the water.

I have to disagree with the mineral comments. I wore it and I do not look washed out at all. My MUA applied some sort of extra something ( i'm not sure exactly) but maybe that helped with not looking washed out. Here is a pic after being outside takings pics for an hour with temp of about 85.

Rachel, choosing traditional vs. air brush is really a personal preference and depends also on the level of skill your MUA has.

I typically use airbrush on my brides since they like the light weight feel yet full coverage that it offers. Airbrush is also really good for people with skin issues or lines since it is a micronized mist it can be applied to the face in thin layers creating the look of skin without the imperfections.

There are two types of airbrush makeup: Silicone Base and Water Based. I carry both but most artists only have one type. Water based will give you a more matte finish while silicone based will give you a more dewey finish.

Both should be long lasting if applied properly and sealed correctly. I would probably go for airbrush if I was in your shoes if you do go traditional make sure you are using a makeup artist who uses professional photo ready foundation without SPF.

Angie the picture you have is taken in overcast light, while most brides will be using lots of flash and have overhead lighting. Again, that with mineral makeup is a big no no. I am a published makeup artist who started off working in commercial makeup where my whole focus was makeup that looked good for on camera. I have never seen or heard of a true professional using mineral makeup. There are lots of hobbiests out there who will use non-professional makeup that will not photograph well on brides this is simply from their lack of knowledge and experience in makeup.

If mineral makeup is something that you want to use on your wedding day that is totally fine. Just be aware that it might not be the best choice for coverage or flash photography. Avoiding anything with zinc and SPF is always good.
