Advice on what to use on our wood lettering guest book

Deanna, on April 29, 2015 at 9:54 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 12

So the FH came up with using those 12 inch long and 1/2 inch thick wood letters you get from Pat Catans for our guest book. We are using the cutouts of a C, D, and &. Just curious if any one has any advice on what to use for people to sign them. I was thinking of staining them a dark color and using a white sharpie or leaving them light in color and using a black sharpie. Any suggestions would greatly help!! Thanks!!

I had thought about that but I am not sure if it would be really messy. I don't want to ruin my guest's clothes. Maybe I will do a trial run and see how it comes out with the paint markers.

I would leave it light and sign with a dark sharpie. Those silver sharpies fade very easily.

I did this for my sisters bridal shower last year. I stained them a darker color and just used silver and gold sharpies to write on. Almost a year later they still look perfect!

If you use a dark stain, and then have your guests sign in a lighter color sharpie you can always put a thin layer of poly/clear coat to protect them from fade and from potential rub off. I believe they make it in a spray paint form. Ask at Home Depot or Lowes. They will be able to give you the best options for making the signatures last a lifetime. Smiley smile

Metallic sharpie, and then I would probably cover it with a spray paint clear coat after the wedding just incase

Thanks everyone for your comments! We are definitively going to go dark with either a white or silver sharpie. And yes, they have a spray poly urethane that my FH has already. We make a lot of pallet and wood items for our house so we have plenty on hand! I am just thankful that my FH is extremely handy with wood. Here is the hickory table he made for our new house when we moved in last October.

Great ideas. I was thinking of doing the wood letters as well so I am glad I saw this post.

@ Debbie did you do a coat of the poly before the guest signed the letter?
