Advice needed!

Bree, on January 30, 2021 at 12:08 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 3

My wife and I were weeks away from our wedding last year when everything shut down, so we had to get married on our back porch with only our parents with us. Since we had everything paid for our venue, we couldn't cancel and were left with the only option to push back our reservation at the venue. We decided to set the date with our venue for our 1 year anniversary... which is April 29th, 2021. We are trying to figure out how to re-invite family. Do we send new invitations with RSVPs or should we just send "change the date" cards with new RSVPs? We've been calling it a vow renewal because we are doing a ceremony--but we probably won't actually be "renewing" our vows. What should we do during the ceremony? Any and all advice for our unique situation would be ****% appreciated!

If you're having an event on your anniversary, the invites would reflect that this upcoming celebration is a separate event. You still call it a renewal of vows or celebration of marriage. You risk offending people by saying this is your real legal wedding when they find out that it's not. You're not changing the date. Just send out renewal of vows invites with their own reply cards.

Thanks for your insight. Everyone already knows that we got married last year and that we would be having something at our venue this year. It's just a matter of how to invite them because it is technically our wedding reception.... with a ceremony, since we've already paid for the space-- and to allow our grandparents, siblings, and other close family members a chance to witness us walk down the aisle. The date also is not exactly our anniversary because that day was already booked at our venue (we were married on April 30th).

Hmm...this is very peculiar. I don't know if you have already done this but I would have suggested sending out new invites since this is technically a separate event.
