Advice needed - When to send out Save the Dates for Destination wedding

Future Mrs. M, on September 6, 2012 at 12:02 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

My fiance and I have decided to get married in Oahu, Hawaii in February 2014. We are SO excited to be able to have a gorgeous wedding in one of our favorite vacation spots. I have been trying to figure out a good time to send out Save the Dates. I was thinking about sending them out about a year before the wedding. The only thing that makes me want to send them out earlier is the fact that guests can start booking their flights and hotels 330 days before the wedding, which will also be a lot cheaper than waiting a couple months before the wedding. Having the Save the Dates already sent out would allow us to send the invitations out closer to 330 days before the wedding which will be more detailed with information about hotels and flight. Does anyone know when the best time is to send out the Save the Dates for a destination wedding? Would it be bad if I send them out more than a year before our wedding? Thanks in advance for any advice!!

I think it would be a perfect idea to send them out early because it is a destination wedding and everyone would have time to find flights and hotels if needed. They might be able to find out better deals. I would.

We're not having a DW, but are planning on sending online STDs to any out of the country guests exactly a year from our wedding so they can start booking too.

Usually, STDs are 6-8 months, but for a destination wedding, I think a year is a good amount of time. But remember that anyone you send an STD to has to receive an invite. Since you have a while before you'll have to send those out, you have time to really look at your guest list and make any necessary cuts in time.

Since guests can start making plans off the STD, you don't necessarily need to send out invites at close to a year, too. That's way too much time for people to forget to RSVP, etc. I think DW invites are about 3 months before. Put together a wedding website with all the info that you can list on your STD for people to get more information, and save the invites for later.

I'd send them at a year out. You can add travel information to your wedding website and list your website on the STDs so your guests will have the information if they want to book early. But sending invites a year out is way too early in my opinion.

I didn't even think about our wedding website! That is a great idea to put the URL on the STD! Thank you all for the advice, it was all very helpful Smiley smile

I'd mail them just after 2/26/13 so they don't think the wedding is in 2013 (instead of 2014).

Hawaii is usually very expensive so I think a year in advance is perfect!

I sent mine for my Sept wedding back in March and then had them RSVP by May. That timeline worked great for us and we have had very minimal changes in RSVPS.

So, a year or so in advance is great!

I sent my STD's out in June of this year. It gave everyone a year to make travel arrangements. I have a lot coming from out of State and a few out of the country. I would send them out a year in advance.

We sent our STDs for our October wedding in March. We included our website on the STD which had information about hotels, etc. We didn't send our invites out until the middle of August. Everything has worked out well, and most people just made their travel arrangements to Puerto Rico based on the STD.

I would send them out no later end of January early February 2013. Definitely put as much information on your website as possible regarding transportation/accommodations.

Just wanted to say thank you for this post because I was thinking the same thing! We're not having a DW, but nearly his entire family is coming overseas. We already have the hotel block and I've been working on the website so I'll be sure to add that on our STDs. Thank you for not having me to post a new forum!
