a week before wedding and i dont like my dress

Katherine, on August 28, 2020 at 11:27 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 29

Has anyone else went from LOVING their dress when they bought it and then not liking it a few months later for alterations? I am a week out from my wedding and I really dislike the dress. I feel fat and frumpy in it and it just is not how I remember it, I have felt this way since receiving the dress and hoping I would feel different with alterations but still do not like it. My mom said she thinks it looks great and so does the woman that is altering but seriously who is going to tell a bride otherwise LOL.

I originally picked it because I love the loose ruffled bottom, not sure what I am looking for here just support I guess and if others have experienced the same thing. Picture of the dress is from before alterations so it looks loose in the shoulders still here.

I mean, I had a David's bridal alterations lady suggest me losing weight three weeks before my original wedding, so don't rule anything out lol.

Honestly? Its hard to tell from that picture. I definitely had a "style" I decided I liked after losing a lot of weight, and I picked out a mermaid thinking it would be perfect. And it was....except I hated the back and the off should sleeves were atrocious. I finally sold it lol and I'm glad to let it be someone else's.
What don't you like? Is it possible to alter it somehow? Adding a belt or maybe a topper can change the whole look. Or maybe you just need to see the whole look?

I love that dress on you! The bottom is flowey and elegant. I’m sorry you’re not feeling 100% with it but I promise it looks stunning. What’s more important is how you feel about the dress though! I wonder if there are any last minute accessories that you can add to help you. Have you tried on veils, belts, etc? Sometimes those can really help. I really hope you come to fall in love with the dress again and that you feel like royalty on your big day 💖

I think the dress is absolutely gorgeous on you, if you hate it, I guess you can go wedding dress shopping again. I recommend using Azazie for affordable dresses.

You may be right, I am hoping with a spray tan and my hair and makeup done I will feel different. I love the bottom that is the reason I picked it. I think what I do not like is the top feels a bit restrictive.. when I tried it on at the boutique they had the clips in for the shoulder area and I guess I assumed it would be more in the middle of the shoulder but it still looks towards the edge now that its altered where it feels funky. The bust area also feels a bit up too high to where mine actually lay but thats also because I wont have a bra on under it due to the low back. I mean.. its for a 4 hour elopement with 15 people and I know that no one will care I just hate the feeling of not being obsessed with my dress and liking how I look in it for my wedding. However, we are our own worst critic usually.

Thank you! I have ordered Azazie before but I am afraid it wouldnt come in time and I hate the thought of wasting $1200 on a dress and not wear it lol my mom would be so upset. I may just be my own worst critic...

Thank you! The ruffles in the bottom is what made me fall in love with it originally.

We are our own worst critic! You can speak up and see if there's anyway they can adjust the shoulder area. With everything done up and your accessories you'll probably feel so much better. My elopement dress bad spaghetti straps that kept slipping down even after they did alterations. If you're having a similar problem maybe you can look into a back necklace to hook the straps together so they stay up? Good luck girl! I'm sure you'll look amazing.

I was not planning on wearing a veil. I did originally get a headband peice and decided not to wear that either after trying it in with my hair trial... so maybe I have outfit commitment issues LOL I have 1 week to go so I just hope that once I am fully put together with my hair and makeup and tan that I will feel better in it and more beautiful.

    It's a beautiful gown!

i think it's because we have this thing in our minds where any shred of doubt just grows larger and larger when it comes to wedding planning

I think the dress is pretty on you!! Though, it doesn't matter what my opinion is, what matters is your opinion. If you don't feel comfortable in it, then I think something should be done to make you feel comfortable in it. Are you able to narrow it down to specific issues (such as, the waist doesn't sit where you want it to, or you think the skirt is too wide, etc)? If so, bring it back to alterations to see if there's anything they can do to address those issues. I like the previous comment's idea of adding a belt or accessory too.

Beautiful!!! Honestly don't see anything frumpy about it....I love how it shows off your figure in a classy way.....timeless and classic style.....you are a beautiful bride!! It may just be pre-wedding anxiety manifesting in a wonky way!

I think it looks really pretty on you… But I have an idea! What if you order or find a sparkly belt before the wedding to change it up a little bit and get you excited again? It’s something easy that you can do at the last minute.

The dress is beautiful and looks great on you.

I'll ask a couple of questions:

Were you bloated when you've tried this dress on? Keep in mind depending on what you ate, you could've felt / looked bloated and that will DEFINITELY change the appearance of the dress. Try the dress on first thing in the morning after a BM (YEP, I SAID IT).... - and if you still feel the same way.... see below

Have you tried shapewear if the above question is a no, try a couple of versions maybe that will take away that "fat" feeling.

Were you wearing the right "wedding dress underwear" - That makes a difference too...

But honestly, I think like the others have said you look beautiful. But at the end of the day YOU have to feel beautiful.

Me! I was having a hard time with alterations, and constantly second guessing my dress choice. I was considering buying the same dress in my correct size and just eating the cost. My wedding photos and video came out so great, I don’t think you’ll notice your dress because you’ll be focused on your FH!
