A wedding, the Derby, & hats?

Jamie, on February 19, 2017 at 12:33 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 33

I just realized my wedding date falls on the same day as the Kentucky Derby. Our theme is already vintage garden. I jokingly threw the idea out there of wearing garden/Derby hats to the wedding and several of my guest love it! (Normally, we attend a Derby party every year and wear our hats) I know for a fact my mom is wearing a gorgeous birdcage.

What are your thoughts on brides wearing them now? I just found this and I think it's stunning (insert heart eye emojis)! My dress is a similar style and I'm not crazy over a veil anyway...

Thoughts?

I wouldn't wear one as the bride, but I think it is a fun idea as a guest. Maybe buy one and do some pictures with it on and some without it.

I think its fun! If all your guests understand this tradition anyway why not. I would take some of your formals without it tho as well.

I know we are wanting to do some fun pics. Just for reference, I know some Derby hats can get obnoxious, here's a pic of the style we normally go for.

YES. I think that's absolutely beautiful. Also, as a guest I would think this was so fun. I loved going to the derby in college and would definitely wear a hat!

TimeLadyErika funny you should mention...our officiant is hysterical and sent a text saying he could add communion into our service but we were only doing it with mint juleps!

I live in Kentucky, so getting married on Derby Day, it would definitely be appropriate to wear a derby hat. If you're going to pull in a little Derby inspiration, bring in a few things. Mint juleps, like TLE said, would be one great way.

I love it! It reminds me of a friend who is from England, she got married here in the States and all of her UK friends and family flew in, over there it's tradition to wear elaborate hats and fascinators to weddings, so I absolutely loved seeing all of them at her wedding here.

I wear fascinators to weddings (and I wore one at my own). LOVE any excuse to get a new hat.

What a fun idea! Personally as the bride, I would not wear it down the aisle but I would wear it as a photo opp and maybe as you are announced into the reception!

One of my sister-in-laws is from England and when my other brother got married this last spring we joked about her wearing a hat because it's obviously normal where she's from. I think it's a fun idea, and if you can rock a hat, go for it!

I love hats at weddings. It's very common in the UK which is one of the reasons I was so excited when my FI and I chose to get married in London (I'm American, he's British and we live in Switzerland). My sister, the MOH, can't even contain her excitement.

Go big if you want to, but if you want something a little smaller and/or a little more traditionally bridal, you can look for a bridal fascinator. There are a bunch of people on etsy who sell really nice ones.
