A couple of months ago, I went to a co-workers wedding. Everything was beautiful, but nothing was organized. She called me everyday up to the wedding to cry because her wedding planner didn't help plan the locations of the ceremony or reception, help create timelines, or accept her phone calls 6 weeks before the wedding or had to be charged additional. I promise I wouldn't be making a big deal out of this if she was doing everything herself, which I am myself doing everything. But, she took out a $25,000 loan for the Wedding on top of whatever she had in her checking account and paid this lady $5K. She also has 2 kids and lives in an apartment. Is this a normal or a usual occurrence? This is in north Florida in a very rural town, not like a big city. Just very curious if anyone here has also toon out large amounts of money for their Big Day?

FYI, I'm not interested in doing the same.

I'm pretty sure, in my life, the only reason that I would ever borrow $25k is for a mortgage.

That gave me anxiety just reading it. No, that is not normal. That's actually pretty irresponsible if you ask me.

Have the wedding you can afford, not the one that's going to put you into debt for years.

Shame on the banks who do wedding loans. They are capitalizing on the fact that people want to have their dream wedding and putting them in debt for years. And making profit on the interest!!

Crazy and stupid. It's not a great idea to start out in debt due to a wedding...

Omg...what the hell was she thinking? That would be my financial ruin for sure. You plan for the wedding you can afford! You don't go into major debt to have an expensive wedding. That's just ridiculous!

If you can't afford a wedding, don't have one. It's that simple. Don't go into debt for it!

Wow. The first rule of wedding planning should be "plan the wedding you can afford". Who would want to be paying for their wedding the rest of their life with that amount? Loans for weddings are bad ideas and you start off married life in debt. I hope she was just trying to see what you would say about it and didn't actually take out a loan for her wedding.

No that is not normal and fiscally irresponsible.
