$25,000 Loan for Wedding

JML, on April 13, 2016 at 11:15 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 68

A couple of months ago, I went to a co-workers wedding. Everything was beautiful, but nothing was organized. She called me everyday up to the wedding to cry because her wedding planner didn't help plan the locations of the ceremony or reception, help create timelines, or accept her phone calls 6 weeks before the wedding or had to be charged additional. I promise I wouldn't be making a big deal out of this if she was doing everything herself, which I am myself doing everything. But, she took out a $25,000 loan for the Wedding on top of whatever she had in her checking account and paid this lady $5K. She also has 2 kids and lives in an apartment. Is this a normal or a usual occurrence? This is in north Florida in a very rural town, not like a big city. Just very curious if anyone here has also toon out large amounts of money for their Big Day?

FYI, I'm not interested in doing the same.

Oh wow, first I have nightmares about my wedding being disorganized which is why I am so OCD about EVERYTHING and im not sleeping. anyways. yea I would never take out a loan for consumer purposes. it has to be an investment i.e. school, house other than that, if I can't afford it...I don't do it

I've heard of people taking out a 0% APR credit card to pay for the honeymoon (with ample means to pay it back before the 12 month period is over). But that's RIDICULOUS.

Hell no! You don't go broke paying for a wedding. Clearly she couldn't afford what she wanted. Good luck with that!

Why the hell would you take out a loan? If you don't have the funds to pay for the wedding you want, then just go to the courthouse and get married.

$25k loan?! That could have been spent somewhere else! We spent about 18k total for 200 guests though, but we were already established with our home and comfortable with it.

Uh no... I'm going to go with the wedding we can afford. I would never take out a loan for a wedding.

Wow I feel so bad for her. I would be a wreck if I took out a loan of that amount to pay for my wedding. I get wanting a certain wedding. but I wouldn't enjoy the day knowing that I owe that money

Going into debt to pay for a wedding is the dumbest thing ever! Only plan what you can afford.

Given that financial troubles are a major cause of divorce, it makes no sense to go into debt for the wedding.

Like I said, I didn't even know it was possible. I was also wondering if maybe it was a cultural thing. She's Cambodian (Asian descent) and she said she's probably had the most inexpensive wedding out of her whole family! Trust me, I thought she was joking at first too.

That sucks for her but I think she should have thought it threw just a little because taking a loan out for a wedding is a bad idea

I know someone whose parents took out a second mortgage to pay for her wedding. I personally think it's crazy, but I guess it isn't really my business how anyone manages their money.
