A couple of months ago, I went to a co-workers wedding. Everything was beautiful, but nothing was organized. She called me everyday up to the wedding to cry because her wedding planner didn't help plan the locations of the ceremony or reception, help create timelines, or accept her phone calls 6 weeks before the wedding or had to be charged additional. I promise I wouldn't be making a big deal out of this if she was doing everything herself, which I am myself doing everything. But, she took out a $25,000 loan for the Wedding on top of whatever she had in her checking account and paid this lady $5K. She also has 2 kids and lives in an apartment. Is this a normal or a usual occurrence? This is in north Florida in a very rural town, not like a big city. Just very curious if anyone here has also toon out large amounts of money for their Big Day?

FYI, I'm not interested in doing the same.

There's a credit union in my area that at one time (maybe they still do) offered wedding loans...

Honestly, if it's something she wanted to do then we can't judge her for it. I definitely would not do the same, though. Not worth it for only one day of your life vs financial stability throughout marriage!

I don't know a single person who has taken out a loan to have a wedding.

I've known people who have gone to the courthouse, people who have thrown daytime simple weddings, and super fancy resort weddings...

But not one person has taken out a loan... you have the wedding you can afford!

No! You do not take out a loan to have a party. You will be paying that $25,000 back for probably 10-15 years with interest. You will probably end up paying around $30-35k once you factor in interest. No party is worth putting yourself into debt. That is just plain idiocy. Have the wedding you can afford.

People with bad money managing skills and poor people trying to keep up with the Joneses take out foolish wedding loans. If you live paycheck to paycheck, you don't have a $25k wedding, especially on loan. Obviously she has zero judgment and if I had to bet money, did she use student loan money for this wedding?

I don't really trust this story... FH lived in Cambodia for two years. It's a very, VERY poor country. I just have a hard time believing someone from that background would have the "smallest wedding of her friends" at 25000. Especially because the Cambodians also aren't showy people. They are really humble... I don't know...

$25,000 is insane! We took out a very small loan because we needed a little extra up front, have already started paying it back and will pay it back very quickly.

Wow, how the heck can anyone justify $25k loan for a wedding? I just can't wrap my head around it.

That is a gal who cant see past the party and thinks its the "biggest day of her life." I will admit its special, but not worth ruining the monetary comfort of the many many many years that come after that. An overpriced wedding does not a good marriage make. Especcially with so many divorces being because of financial fighting. So, no, not normal or smart

Taking out a loan is crazy. People need to have the wedding the can afford! I also never would've paid the wedding planner. I would've fired her for not doing her job!

That is the dumbest reason for a loan! We are still saving but my parents are helping for the wedding

That is ridiculous. Nothing says marital bliss like starting out 25k in debt!

I don't know anyone who has taken out a wedding loan--that's crazy! I do have friends who have a warped sense of where to put there income, and how to save. Just be there to support them through dumb decisions and work through their twisted sense of reality.

The only crazy thing we are doing is putting our honeymoon in the credit card to keep money in the wedding account for food and alcohol. That's such a waste of money, they could have pulled it off for way less than that
