I'm feeling discouraged. My fiance and I were engaged on July 18th of this year, and are planning a May 20,2017 wedding due to funding and school. I really feel that time is dragging and its going to take forever for our big day to get here! I also feel guilty doing any planning because its so in advance. Any tips from those who are having/have had a long engagement? Does time crawl or is it going fast for you?

Ours will be exactly the same amount of time (1 year and 10 months). It felt like it was going to take forever just a few short months ago, but I liked not having to stress and plan things a little at a time. Now it feels like crunch time all of a sudden, so definitely enjoy the slow pace at first!

That was the same length as our engagement. Let me tell you this...

    TIME WILL FLY.

One day, you'll be saying, "Oh, we have some much time to figure out X or Y, LOL!"

The next you'll be saying, "OMG WHERE DID THE TIME GO?!?!"

Since you have a good head start, I'd suggest use it on securing your venue, playing any DIY, etc.

    Congrats and good luck!

We have the same timeline as you, got engaged July 9, 2014 and we are getting married on 5/21/16. We booked our venue last September and we got locked in at the 2015 rates since they did not have the rates for 2016 available. It seems really far away but I promise you it will fly by. I recommend looking for a venue and any vendors you want we booked far out and got our first choices so there are advantages to a longer engagement

I think our engagement was that long too. 1 year, 10 months. we were engaged in may 2013, married in march 2015.

at times i loathed our long engagement. especially when people asked all the questions, 'WHY SO LONG?! wah.' but in the end... so worth it. we were able to completely cash finance our dream wedding, i had plenty of time to get the vendors i wanted and make everything perfect. it was hard at times. sometimes it felt like the time dragged, but then other times it was like, holy crap. it's flying. especially the last couple months.

try to enjoy it. it'll be like a rollercoaster. but it will all work out and be totally worth it.

We had an 18 month engagement. My advice is: get the big stuff done early, and take a break in the middle, if you can afford the down-payments for the venue and photographer and caterer now, and let the rest wait. You will drive yourself mad if you start trying on dresses this far in advance, and picking out cakes and such. Too much time will drive you crazy on details.

You need the venue, you and you will have more choice booking as far in advance as you can, but once you do that, let it go for a bit. It will become a part time job, and you'll mentally exhaust yourself and hit "IDGAF" land way too early otherwise Smiley winking

We will have been engaged for 1 year and 11 months when we get married. FH proposed last August and next week we will be starting our last year of college. For a long time nothing really changed other than we were able to attend immediate family functions together (my parents and their rules...). This summer though we have finally started planning and now time is starting to move. There's a long way to go and I can't help but get jealous with other couples, but that's life. I'm just ready for it to be next May so I will be out of school!

We are having a long engagement too (20 Months) and I'm a planner who couldn't help it haha. Instead of deciding the specifics of everything, my fiance' and I have basically locked in our vendors for everything we'll need, but held off on the design. We've got a bakery, for example, but only a vague idea of our order. I think it's best of both worlds: I get to plan without locking us into things crazy early. Plus, you should take advantage of your early engagement, it means that every vendor you want is probably available Smiley smile

Ours was a 2 year 7 month engagement! We are now just under the 11 month mark (by one day, lol) and I can say the July went by very slowly and August went by very fast! I'm hoping this trend of it going by quickly keeps up! I'm so over wedding planning, I'm just ready to be married!
